What travelers are saying
- Leen MTurnhout, Belgium353 contributionsSan Juan del Sur is mostly a lay-back bachpackers town. Many tourists come here, so the vast majority of the locals speak quite decent English (which is not the case everywhere in Nicaragua).
The port and promenade have been improved, it looks fancier now.
It's not real-life Nicaragua, but it's a very good starting point.Written August 18, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We drove up the hill, the parking was more than spacious enough. The stairs was a bit steep, but very much doable. $1 for Nicaraguans, $2 for foreigners.
It's a pretty small site, but that's OK. The statue is nice (stairs ánd wheelchair ramp to get to a platform just under the statue), the panorama of the bay is stunning. Under the statue, there is a small chapel/exposition about the building of the statue and some information about other Christ statues in the world.Written August 18, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I did one week of lessons (3 hours a day) and a homestay that was arranged by my instructor Vanessa. It was hard work but Vanessa made the classes fun and pertinent to my needs. The Homestay was a big positive and helped me have truly immersive experience. I had some breakthroughs with my Spanish through the experience.. I highly recommend it.Written November 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Leen MTurnhout, Belgium353 contributionsEven though I'm generally not a beach lover at all, I really loved this one! It was calm, not too many people (hardly any at all) and amazing waves. Fine sand, nothing to hurt your feet on. Many, many, mány crabs...Written August 19, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tuffysinclair27 contributionsGreat beach. Quick cab from SJDS - there is an entrance fee (2.00 usd ish) we had the whole beach to ourselves in the morning.
Small lovely hotel on beach has food and drink to purchase. Also, one seasoning of Survivor was filmed on this beach (for fans!)Written December 10, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Firstly we were running late and Rosa not only waited for us, but also offered us to get drinks and snacks as she was aware we had been rushing.
When we got to la flor we were one of the only tourists there and got to release hundreds of newly hatched turles. Rosa and the driver didn’t rush us at all, we waited until all the turtles had reached the sea, and gave additional help to the ones struggling.
She also took photos of us and was very proactive about giving us a good experience.
We also went off season so Irvin was very proactive about finding out and contacting us when we could go.

There are a few great places to get food and drinks on the beach. Feels secluded and it’s such a fun relaxing vibe. Very safe to visit, with a great atmosphere. Awesome for beginner surf lessons.Written January 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- 2aussiebackpackersSunshine Coast, Australia25 contributionsWe found out about this place by a poster in SJDS so we got a shuttle from our hostel out when the surf was blown out. The course is a 12 hole course and only cost C$50/each for unlimited play and lots of discs to choose from. Its a short course but lovely maintained and playable by all skill levels. - Es_boWest Bloomfield Township, MI243 contributionsAmazing, quiet beach - no facilities so be prepared! Great spot for sunsets. Less crowded than Hermosa.Written March 15, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DAVID UWhite Rock, Canada593 contributionsTe plaza is easy to get to and there is a good selection of local crafts. Worth 40 minutes to stroll around. Close to the cruise ships.Written December 25, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Nomad4835001 contributionWalked in just to get an idea of the other school besides the ones described by Lonelyplanet. She got me right away. For me, it was the exact balance between strict and easy. Between grammar and conversing. But the greatest thing is that she is both a local hero and rebel at the age of 63. I would definitely recommend her. To get to know Spanish, and the local community. Classroom was not ideal but is about to be improved. Have fun!Written November 24, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
