Fonthill Castle is like no other castle I've seen. You will not see a lot of draperies, faded wallpaper, or over-stuffed furniture. Instead, you will see Gothic architecture, narrow, winding stairways, and a maze of passages. It will not surprise you to know the owner, Henry Mercer, was a fan of Edgar Allen Poe. Henry Mercer was an archaeologist, antiquities collector, ceramicist, and a visionary designer. He filled his home with prints, ceramic tiles, and artifacts--a showplace for his many interests.
Your ticket includes an informative, 1 hr guided tour, and is well worth it. (The only caveat--if you are claustrophobic or have mobility issues, please let your guide know.)

For the tool freak! Fantastic collection of tools from a time when people worked with their hands, all sorted by trades. Very enjoyable!

The Michener Art Museum has an extensive permanent collection and rotating exhibits housed within an architectural gem of a building (a nineteenth-century prison). The George R. Anthonisen sculpture exhibit “Meditations on the Human Condition” (through October 13, 2024) was particularly impressive and educational, and Joseph Meierhans’ “The Jazz Trio” was one of the many highlights of the permanent collection. Special thanks to the staff member who helped me bring Ziui Chen’s “Up, Up, and Away” to life!

This is an absolutely amazing playground! The kids always have a blast and beg to go back. The castle itself is surrounded by a fence so the kids can run wild while you sit outside the gate in the shade. There is a lot of grassy area for picnics, a water fountain and a big hill to roll down. It is best suited for preschool age and older (4'ish) as kids who can go into the castle and climb around independently will have the most fun, and it's a bit of a tight squeeze for parents to accompany little ones. There is not a lot of shade - I usually go on a weekday to avoid the crowd and make sure I can get a good picnic table. If you go when it's crowded you may spend the whole day in the sun. The only downside is that the bathrooms are by the parking lot - so it's a bit of a walk, especially if you have younger kids who need to go NOW. :)

My wife and I met an old friend in Doylestown and decided to go to Vampa. None of us really had any preconceived ideas of what to expect. I was picturing one room with a few artifacts but it was actually the entire first floor of an old farmhouse. Lots of artifacts, skulls, dolls, artwork, sculptures etc. It's on the property of a large Antique store (barn) and the property itself is worth a visit (and that part is free). Lots of strange and interesting stuff to see there including fake dinosaurs and other animals. But back to the museum. It was cool and fun and a little creepy, which is awesome. I took a gazillion pictures but I'm only going to share a handful. I think the less you see ahead of time the more fun it will be to go and then be surprised. If I could make one suggestion — they need a big sign out front that you can see from the road. We passed the place at first cause we didn't realize where it was. The sign on the road says, "Antiques".

If you go to the castle, go next door and take the short tour and see the video. Helps you appreciate Mercer’s tile creations and the tile in his house. Watch a craftsman make tiles from local clay, just as it was done a hundred years ago.

Within walking distance from the middle of Doylestown is a museum filled with Civil War history.

Last night their guides gave an informative tour of the Doylestown Cemetery which focused on the residents of Doylestown who served, and some died, during the Civil War.

I learned the meaning of "Saved by the bell".

Doylestown is a cozy and charming town, combining history with the modern. Many great restaurants and good food. One Saturday night, there was dining in the street, as one block was closed off and all the restaurants moved chairs/tables and service into the street. Music added to the fun. Fun sites are: Pearl S. Buck home; downtown Doylestown; Mosaic Tile Museum; Mercer Museum

Full size sandwiches and old world pub atmosphere in a busy section of Doylestown. Staff works at a quick pace to attend to customer needs. Parking is difficult and the location is not directly on Main Street, but well worth the effort.
Located on each side of a walkway, the restaurant and pub are on opposing sides of the walkway. For my wife and I, a favorite.
