I've driven past this many times while on my way to somewhere else on I-84. We finally decided to stop and check it out. Highly recommended museum depicting the geology, natural history, and human history of the Columbia Gorge.

This place is amazing! I suggest you spend a day walking around, bring a picnic and your pup, and a camera!

Although this doesn't look like a fort it is what's left. We were greeted outside and were shown inside, they even held the door for us. After a short explanation about the fort we were on our way around the museum. Could not believe the stuff they put in this building. Don't miss the transportation building. The Anderson home was interesting and the cookies are great

We had a blast on the course, well-marked and groomed, great views the entire time because this park is on the hillside.

Amazing, cool building, an old flour mill. So much history, and so eclectic. Great staff who knew a lot of the history. Great experience. Wine was okay, not great, but the experience, building and staff made it well worth the stop. Also, super cool wall mural out front.

Loved these. They honor the Native Americans way of life, also the Corps or Discovery and recent history. My iPhone photos do not do them justice- you really need a wide-angle lense!

Spanning the Columbia River Gorge several miles east of The Dalles (city), the Dalles Dam was built in 1957-62. The reservoir it created covered multiple petroglyph sites, and some panels were removed and relocated to Columbia Hills State Park. From the visitors center (exit 87) you can take a tour (if you are a US citizen with ID). Free 1-hour tours are offered, but only on certain days and hours between May 1 and Sept 30, and must be booked in advance.

I was traveling on the American Empress and had a free afternoon. The Landmark wasn't on the Hop-on Hop-off tours, but we drove by it and the local historian mentioned the rooster on the steeple. I decided to walk to the site to check it out, basically to find out about the rooster. It is beautiful inside and the docent was great. I was her only visitor at the time and she spent much time with me answering questions and discussing preservation. I would suggest anyone spend an hour in this gem.

Very nice place to stop. The lady inside was very nice and informative.
Has a great shaded area next to it for walking dogs
And letting kids run off energy.

A hidden gem and a must visit in the city known as the end of the Oregon overland trail. The owner was on site and apparently often is to talk to guests. There is a nice fifteen minute movie to start and the displays thereafter trace the history of electric lights and the development of neon. The parent lawsuit that opened the market was well explained. Don’t miss the second floor where the owners other collections are also very interesting.

We got on and off of Route 30 as often as was necessary due to construction. The views were incredible of the magnificent Columbia River Gorge.

Some of us are attracted to antiques like bees to nectar, so no surprise that we found ourselves buying a cool brass item in this neat little shop. The prices here are a little higher than ideal, but the shop is also a bit more sophisticated in the items it sells and how they are presented. The staff are friendly and fun. We very much enjoyed our visit.

Popped into the wine outlet in The Dalles and had some lovely wines in the great company of Colter and his folks. Good to hear of Colter’s Barossa Valley experience in Oz. Great wine tastings and very happy with purchased vino !

This fire museum is in one of the old fire engine bays of the current town hall. It's a small collection but I found it all very interesting. There are old fire engines which were beauties, and I also liked the collection of photos showing the firefighters from the early 1900s. There was a real sense of community around serving the needs of the various parts of The Dalles.
