I first visited Dunkery in 1971 and have made it back several times since, and have been very lucky to enjoy clear weather on each visit.
This time was an emotional trip as due to deteriorating mobility issues I might not be able to climb it again.
    Such a special place.

Our daughter, who is an experienced rider, took two trips, two hours each. First time with the guide, who was both friendly and interested. She chose a beautiful route. Two hours later both girls returned with a big smile.
The second trip was, including another guide, with four riders. A different and also beautiful route. The very friendly owner brought ice cream. One of the horses lost a shoe, so the rider, who was a little older, was picked up. The man was offered another ride at a time at his convenience.
The horses looked happy and healthy.

Proficient and friendly guides, nice horses, and a lovely area. I highly recommend Burrowhayes Farm Riding Stables.

This is a favourite haunt and we keep returning every year. The coastline you see in the distance, the tall trees, the locals, the flora, fauna - everything is beautiful. And timeless.

We visited this lovely garden set on a hillside overlooking the sea, a lovely setting.
The azaleas, rhododendrons & camellias were beautiful as were the erythronium just starting to bloom. What a treat to stumble across the lovely little chapel with the beautiful woodcarving of mother & child at the end of the garden, it made the day.
The owner was friendly & helpful too. Thank you

Lovely views but beware of ticks. Our dog was on a lead and not allowed into long grass but still picked up 5 ticks. This was in mid April.

Noticed this on a wet day but do also visit the garden which is brilliant. Wonderful local museum full of interesting history in a magnificent building. And it is definitely worth a generous donation as it is FREE !! thank you to the volunteers!

Drove the road on Tuesday 27th September 2022. Seen snooty reviews saying the views ain't that good and there is nowhere to stop, as well as complaining about the trees blocking what view there is. There are places to stop but not many and there are trees but they add to the aesthetic as there are also plenty of gaps. The toll booth was unmanned and I guess it may be they only man it during high season. As it was local traders seem to use the road as a rat run to avoid the steep ascent/descent in and out of Porlock. Nice drive and the road seems better than I read in terms of potholes etc. Do everything once in life so go on it once but though some reviews slag off the view (I recall the Fawlty Towers episode where Basil says to Mrs Richards, what were you expecting it's Torquay not the Hanging Gardens of Babylon or some such), it is just a nicer view of Porlock beach and marsh.

We often visit this lovely gallery when in Porlock. The exhibition is always carefully chosen, varied and changes often. On our last visit I wanted to buy a suprise present for my husband of a picture he'd admired. I emailed the gallery and they were exceptionally helpful in enabling me to buy the picture secretly and get it to me. I really recommend them. Also welcoming to children (but obviously keep an eye on them, with all those valuable breakables around!).

Visited the centre searching for a room in Porlock in a very busy week. Debbie was so helpful and professional. She managed to secure us a lovely room in a local B & B.
The centre has a vast amount of information on this incredible area. We are visiting from Australia.

An interesting trip in a comfortable vehicle.
Andrew was obviously passionate about exmoor and this came across in the information he gave us during the tour.
He showed us villages and buildings, geology, farming practices, history and wildlife in a very enjoyable 3 hour tour. Also went off road to see the Doone valley and told us the story of Lorna Doone- were so intrigued we walked down it in the afternoon.

Whilst the church was closed when we visited it's charming from the outside and has a very peaceful garden at the rear. Worth tarrying awhile.

Stoke Pero Church is high up on the wilds of Exmoor serving a scattering of hill farms. The sign in the church says it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book but the oldest part of the current building was built in the 13th century. The tower is original as is the north porch. The rest of the church, although beautiful in its own rustic way is Victorian. The list of rectors for this church goes back to 1242. Possibly the only church I've visited with a churchyard covered in red deer droppings and where they have stable type door to the porch (top closed) to try and keep the deer out. Amazing place.

Traditional church, except for the spire clad in shingles. Lovely inside, although i have seen better stained glass windows
