One of the most visceral experiences of our cruise excursion was swimming with sea turtles, and of course fish and coral in a rainbow of vivid colors.

It was especially thrilling to snorkel in open water with the kids for their 1st time. The reef in Mahahual MX gave us a show to remember - it was like floating through carefully designed and sculpted aquariums.

Instead of booking an excursion through Royal Caribbean, we found a taxi at the Costa Maya port and asked them to take us to Mahahual. We paid $4 pp plus tip for the taxi and $30 for a beach-front table, 4 chairs and 4 loungers under the canopy of palm trees.

After playing and snorkeling on Mahahual beach for a while, a man by the name of Miguel offered us a private snorkel excursion at the reef for $35 pp. We ended up settling on $30 pp and I'm glad we did - it was worth every penny. Our guides were Jesus 1 and Jesus 2, and though they spoke very little English, I understood them to be both kind and gentle. Jesus 1 was so patient as we helped our youngest children, ages 9 and 11, adjust to the open water and their snorkel gear. Jesus then guided us to see the the reef and it's abundant sea life, including turtles, rainbow fish, parrot fish, and so much more.

One of the best water parks we’ve been to, highly recommend. Amazing slides, elevators to the top, great zip-lines, lots of shade.

As soon as we arrived at 40 Cannons we were greeted by Luis and he was more than attentive all day. My wife and I found the spot to be very clean, the service was exceptional and the food and drink plentiful. I would recommend this to anyone. The price is right. Also had a message while on the beach which was well worth the $40.00.

Swimming with the dolphins was so much fun! They were so intelligent and we had the opportunity to play and swim with them one on one. Our group was in the water with them for about 30-45 minutes. Pictures were available for purchase at the end.

We were apprehensive about going to Costa Maya based off the reviews but we had a great time! We weren't hassled much, just needed to tell them no and they left us alone. Pool entertainment was fun and shopping was as well. We also enjoyed several margaritas at Grill and Chill.

I spent the day at Hayhu beach club from the Royal Carribean cruiseport. My fiance had booked it, when i heard we were taking a 20 min taxi ride there ill admit i was a bit nervous of how that would go.

They were EXTREMELY organized, they contacted us immediately on the process. We met our driver Hector right outside of the cruiseport, standing with our names written down on a sign so he was easy to find. He took us there, arrived around 9:30 and it was absolutely beautiful. We had a great relaxing day, enjoying fair priced drinks, hammocks, beach and the great view. It was very clean and private. The manager of Hayhu asked us what time we would like Hector to come back for us, we decided 2:30 would be good. Our same driver as before, Hector arrived at 2:30 on the dot to take us back. It felt very safe, and if i was visiting Costa Maya again i would totally go back to Hayhu. 10/10!

This is a review for cruising passengers.
Skip the Costa Maya cruise port and come here if you're for the beach.
Malecon is the main promenade strip running all the way along the Mahahual beach. The place is pretty young, still developing.
Malecon starts from the white lighthouse and Mahahual letter sign, and runs more than a mile south.
There are many cafes, restaurants, some hotels (rather say BB) and bunch of souvenir and massage vendors. Each of the above has its beach part with chairs and tables, most of them with great food at a reasonable price.
You can reach it on foot from your ship which will take around 20 min or hiring a cab for around 10-12 $ one way.

I had the best experience there. They say it's great and it is! It has so few visitors that the coral is bright. alive and amazing. The sea life is not afraid of divers, but curious and the come by to check you out. The pods of dolphins going by were pretty amazing too!

We did our shore excursion from Norwegian Getaway and had a great guide who took us through the ruins and gave a great narrative and a lot of information. The bus ride was comfortable and the AC was working well, which was helpful for how hot and sticky it was outside. Great experience to see the ruins up close even though you do not get to climb (most of) them. There is one area you are allowed to climb and it is hard to believe the effort and engineering involved in 400 BC onward that put these together.

Good time….. We have been to Costa Maya before. Not a lot to do. A friend recommended reserving here so we decided to give it a try.

We reserved the deluxe package for our party of 6. Upon arrival we were advised that the meal with this was chicken or beef fajitas. These meals were really skimpy on the protein but generous with the veggies.
We ordered additional food items off the menu to fill our bellies. The guacamole and ceviche were BOMB! Service was great.

My only complaints…. The lounger beds truly need some sort of sheets or covers so as we sweat in the sun we aren’t sticking to the plastic. And the people selling things… MAN! I wanted a relaxing day at the beach. The constant interruptions from merchants wanting us to buy items was overwhelming (and just annoying). Because of this, we will have to find another venue to enjoy next time in Costa Maya.

We stopped in Puerto Costa Maya on our cruise. Because we didn't find an excursion we liked, we decided to go off on our own. Found this excursion locally which took us to a nice beach with loungers, umbrellas and drinks/food available. We went out on a boat to a coral reef close by. Amazing views, great tour! Our guides were great! Would tour with them again! Equipment is provided!
