It is always a pleasant surprise what you find on display at the Bascom. from vintage car and motorcycle exhibits to find art of every kind. The offer classes in a variety of areas and the Pottery studio is world class with a talented leader.

My husband and I stopped to look around while passing by. We didn't need or buy anything but they had a lot of cool stuff to look at & we were glad we stopped!

Among a lot of clothing stores we were happy to find this great shop. The whole street is interesting, but we wanted to see local art. We found it here.

This shop is great for jewelry. Unfortunately I was looking for books and vintage clothing, neither of which they had much of. Still, it's a nice stop as you wander around town.

We were driving by and saw the sign, so decided to stop in for a look. We were pleasantly surprised. The gallery was large, open, well-lit and featured a variety of art - mostly paintings but some sculptures and multi-media art as well. Very helpful person on staff also.

Make an offer! It took me awhile to realize that some of the price tags are more of a reference of what ebay or 1st dibs, etc are selling the item for. I've gotten some great deals for MUCH less here by just having the conversation with the staff. The owner is usually on site as well. They WANT you to negotiate! It's alot of fun. I always leave knowing I got a great deal.

Great little find, thrift stores are a wonderful way to get a glimpse of a location that isn’t tailored to tourists. Lots of nick-knacks, antiques, furniture, linens, stuff everywhere. You’ll overhear lots of locals talking about what is going on in town.

We always enjoy shopping when we stop at Highlands, NC. during our fall vacation and as always, we visit Colonel Mustard's. Our most recent visit on Thursday 10/24/19 indicated that something had changed. There were not as many samples as I remembered in the past and I also saw signs stating something to the effect "you open it, you buy it". I've never thought of opening a sealed product from the shelf and those signs struck me as "stating the obvious". It's possible these signs have been around for years but I've just never noticed them before.

I looked up to the front of the store and noticed that the interesting big guy always seated at the checkout was missing.

At the peanut display I was surprised how many of the cans were empty. I had thoughts of being helpful and opening a fresh can, but then I remembered the warning signs! (JK). The day of our visit may have been very busy but in all of my many previous visits, I've never noticed so many empty sample containers.

At the refrigerated cooler I tasted a few of the salsa samples but most seemed to lacking flavor. In fact, salsa in two of the jars were totally dried to the point they wouldn't even pour from the spoon onto the supplied fresh tortilla chip. Stuck like mortar! Made me wonder how long (days, weeks???) these samples had been open for display.

I noticed the nearby “graffiti door” had been replaced with fresh paint. Although it may have seemed tacky to some, others enjoyed looking for their “place” on that door.

Colonel Mustard's is a treat to visit and we always purchase many items... yes I carry around one of those large metal baskets that make it hard to hold and sample things (please supply some smaller baskets or bags as an option).

When I arrived home I found that the store is under new management as of Feb 2019. I understand things change and that management makes decisions as they see fit but from the consumer’s point of view it seems that attention to detail has been lost. I don’t know if changes were made in an attempt to improve profitability but personally, I’ve never quibbled at the prices. If I was seeking low prices prices, I'd search for jams & jellies online. I like the experience of sampling new products for purchase.

Please consider raising prices if needed but keep the vast samples fresh as they have been in previous years.

Please consider the above as constructive criticism.

Wishing Colonel Mustard's many continued years of success! See you on our next visit to Highlands.

Laurel is the one-owner jewelry designer at Bijou, a business in Highlands, NC, for nearly two years. She possesses extensive experience providing jewelry design services While she operates her own store, other jewelers rely on her for designing jewelry and repairing/updating jewelry. My experiences with Laurel include:
purchasing new jewelry, designing jewelry for gifting, modifying estate jewelry, and repairing significant existing jewelry. All of her work has been outstanding, fairly priced, and timely completed. Unlike many jewelers, she is not "pushy." If one asks her for a sincere opinion about a jewelry purchase or potential modification of a piece of jewelry, one will receive an objective answer. She's a very forthcoming and honest person--even about jewelry she does not typically sell. With her length of experience, she has an array of resources to access when unusual requests are presented. Beyond her knowledge and experience, Laurel possesses a delightful personality. She enjoys meeting and communicating with people. Her business is a genuine "jewel" for Highlands.

Love this wonderful store. Full of surprises. Got the clutch and use it everyday
As well as their Man Gifts. The best is that it's all made in USA and maybe locally.
Owners from the area and can answer any questions. Their Kid Section is special too.
