    Ask about the weather beforehand.
Rain can cause pebbles to fall on the road.

We loved this excursion by car on the road to Cilaos. About 420 bends, the crossing of small villages and these majestic ramparts... This road is a bit difficult but it is quite typical.

It's a magnificent, wonderful road with an exceptional spectacle that takes your eyes away.

I know Piton des Neiges is the ultimate hike in this area, but if you don't have the time/inclination, Taibit is a terrific alternative. Beautiful views of the Ciloas and Mafate cirques. It starts on the road outside Cilaos, there is parking along the road, though it fills up quickly. Starting at 7am, I headed out and hiked up to Taibit pass, then all the way down to the town of Marla to refill water, then turned around for the trip back. Trail is challenging with plenty of switchbacks and rocky areas where you need to really watch your footing. Overall, highly recommended.

The signposts suggest that one way on this hike would take up to 4 hours (so 8 hours out and back like I did?) but I assume that is for the long distance trekkers with full packs. I knocked it out in just over 5 hours, stopping for views, etc. I am in pretty good shape though (cyclist), so most people should plan on closer to 6-7. Your legs will be sore. Woke up the next few mornings with very stiff calves!

A small lake in the town surrounded by quite a few restaurants, bars and other activities. We visited at night and enjoyed the area as it was peaceful and clean. Plenty of seats to relax on around the lake.
