#1 of 27 Museums in Outer Hebrides
Loved this place - although it is small and the museum set out in quite an unconventional way; my daughter and i learnt so much about island life and how to strive to get thw balance between nature and humanity.
This is an excellent illustration of island living conditions, There ruins of blackhouses throughout Lewis and Harris but this is in excellent shape and the peat fire is still burning!

The Museum nan Eilean at Lews Castle offers an interactive explanation of the history and culture of the Outer Hebrides alongside a stunning exhibition of unique objects dating from prehistory to the present day.
Great mix of island life and history with a part dedicated to the Lewis Chessmen - great to see six of them on the islands, the short video is really good and thought provoking.

Stunning exhibition of ceramics infused with glass inspired by the geology of Harris and the organic forms found on the beaches and mountains.
... ceramics, engrained with the wild natural environment of his environment with the sea lapping at the door displayed together, provide a refreshing and exciting alternative to the usual art gallery display.

Stefan Davis, a local photographer, has his gallery in a yurt beside his house where you can sit by the stove and look at his wonderful photos whilst drinking excellent coffee and eating superb cake.
The gallery is in a little yurt in the garden and was full of beautiful prints as well as some hand-made crafts (stunning rugs and cushion covers) made by family.

Run by volunteers from the Bernera Historical Society, who also run the Iron Age House at Bosta on Great Bernera, the museum has a selection of Iron Age artifacts on display from the 1996 dig.
It tells the stories of local people, from the Iron Age through the Bernera crofters' riot to the bridge over the Atlantic.

Well worth a visit - the tweed is embedded in the islands' history and economy, and you will see it for sale everywhere you go, so it is interesting to understand some of the history.
Nicely curated exhibit on the history of Harris tweed, including samples of wool, models of looms and historic videos.
