Please Note: If you are arriving on Amtrak as we did, most restaurants in Las Vegas, NM including Bar Castañeda & Kin at Castañeda are closed Monday and Tuesday. There are several very good restaurants within walking distance (1/4 to 1/2 mile). The transit system (Meadow City Express) is by reservation only, fills up quickly and should be contacted in advance of when you need it.

If you love La Posada (Winslow, AZ) you will love Castaneda. Alan Affeldt and Tina Mion have done an outstanding job of restoring this Fred Harvey hotel, as they did in Winslow. We arrived at Castneda via Amtrak and had a King Suite (201) reserved, it was great. Large bedroom and sitting room. Bathroom w/large shower. Rooms were very clean, well maintained, complete with small refrigerator/ freezer and microwave in the sitting room. Check in was quick and easy. Yvonne was on duty at the front desk in the morning. Coffee was ready and she provided us with lots of valuable information about Las Vegas, NM. We had some very wintery weather during our stay so were limited to our adventure since we were afoot.

Bar Castaneda & Kin at Castañeda on site is very clean, well decorated, plus a comfortable area with fire place for dining. We only had one evening of drinks and dinner (we were there Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) and were surprised they were closed for Valentines Day, as were several other hotel guests. Conductor Tea for three and JD on the rocks for me. The Charcuterie board was very good with local meats and cheeses for starters. Dinner was fantastic also, Coal Roasted Cabbage, Fish Dinner, Harvey Smash burger with side salad, I had a true Caesar salad with whole leaves of romaine painted with the Cesar dressing and the Maxima squash soup. We were all very pleased the portions and flavors of our meals. Our servers Justin and Jackson made sure our meal was very enjoyable with their great service.

I only gave Castaneda 4 stars, my reason for this was that no breakfast was available. I understand that at this time, having the restaurant open for breakfast may not be profitable. A possible solution might be to have some pastries or bagels available with the coffee that is available daily, just to get you going.

We are looking forward to planning another visit to Castaneda Hotel to enjoy the
charm and ambience. We would like to explore the area more extensively in the
    future.

A great way to spend an afternoon if you are in to such things. The Alpacas, Pot Bellied Pigs, Dogs and people really make this a joy.

This light sanctuary on the United World College campus(5 miles north of Las Vegas, NM) is not all that well known, even among locals. A nice place to stop and relax, reflect and enjoy the tranquility of the space. While you used to be able to simply drive up and walk to the sanctuary, you now must leave an ID with security at the UWC entrance.

Quaint little plaza. Lots of shade and good places to eat. Time slows down in Las Vegas. Hotel is worth seeing and has character. Longmire was filmed at the plaza. You can take your picture at the sheriff’s office and buy a souvenir at the art gallery.

A better than average local history museum with some nice panels done by students from New Mexico Highlands University. Average artifacts for local history, but the story of Theodore Roosevelt and the Roughriders, who held their reunion in Las Vegas for decades, is very interesting, also with some good artifacts in the exhibits. The museum is free, and only takes a few minutes to go through, so you should stop!

We just walked through the library because of our interest in Carnegie Libraries and their architecture, and were pleased to see that the building is very well maintained. Several patrons were enjoying the light-filled rooms, and the staff was very friendly. I nice visit!

Their selection and pricing are both great. We did not know of them and only came across the store accidentally. We were driving our pick up truck, so we had lots of room to buy larger items and did so. We will go back there as often as possible. A really amazing place in a small out of the way place.

We've been to a number of Wildlife Refuges. The thing that's always fun to us it trying to figure out the variety of birds in the refuge. There are three in the area - Maxwell, Rio Mora and Las Vegas. Contacting the Deputy at Rio Mora, he suggested that at this time Las Vegas might have the best viewing. For a variety of reasons, all three refuges are closed to some extent. Based on his suggestion, we went to Las Vegas. The Refuge is several miles out of town in a flat area with three ponds. The Visitor Center is closed until 2022 for construction. There's a road near each of the ponds. At the first there's a viewing station that provides a good view of the pond. Here we saw a number of birds - probably Canada Geese and ducks. In the distance were a herd of Elk. Even heard one bellow.

We spent most of our time at the second pond where we saw several Sandhill Cranes. They were just standing around near the pond. Just waiting to be photographed.

Glad we went. As with all refuges, patience and expectations drive our satisfaction. We go in expecting to see little. And are really pleased when we see something interesting.

Lots of very interesting items that I had never seen before. Considered purchasing a few, but had no room in the car.

Only stopped by to relax and have a snack while passing by on the freeway. The lake is pretty. People were swimming, fishing and boating. Appears everyone was social distancing. Nice ramadas to picnic. Toilet areas were clean and stocked. It was very windy which would make any activity less fun. They give you a pass when you pay so you can leave and re-enter if necessary.

This is a very nice visitor center, with friendly, helpful staff and lots of useful literature. The Depot is very nicely restored, and has good parking too. You can also get on a passenger train here-to Chicago or Los Angeles-but apparently you can't buy a ticket here.

Not too many years ago, this place had a deli and liquor store up front, a dark bar in the center, and a split-level restaurant in the back. It was a little daunting to find your way to the eatery part, the bathrooms were an adventure, and the store section was cramped and confusing.

Now they have completely redesigned the experience, with a generous bar area from the street to the restaurant, and lots of table seating beside the long expanse of the bar. Plenty of tasty beers, many of them local, on tap, and an eclectic menu that ranges from full-sized Southwestern entrees to humble Frito pies served in a paper boat. I like the Patrick Swayze melt sandwich or the blue corn enchiladas with red chile, but everything on the menu is tasty. Best time to come is during happy hour, when the beer and snacks are cheaper and the people-watching is at its peak.

One can get a bit overwhelmed in this store, but they do offer a stunning variety of items, from clothing to home decor to jewelry. It seemed everything was marked down in some manner or another. The owners are very friendly and chatty!
