Gorgeous and well worth the trip. There is so much to see here all of my kids loved it (ages 8-16) and no one got bored.

A short hike and worth it. It is small but naturally beautiful! Just below it visit the short slot canyon for some nice photo opps. Look up on the high rocks and you might see the longhorn sheep looking down on you.

Not as easy a hike as it once was, as the recent flash floods have scrubbed a lot of sand out of the canyon. The petroglyphs are still wonderful, and Mouse's Tank is still full of tadpoles, but watch your footing on loose rocks, some with sand making them a bit slippery. Encountered a group with hiking poles and wished I had a set. If you're good at rock-clambering, you might actually find the higher route on the rock face more reasonable. I saw a number of people taking that alternative.

This is a decent loop trail. We went clockwise and the first part was down some rocks. We went through a slot canyon. There is an old movie set of a 60’s cowboy movie called “The Professionals”.

Atlatl rock is a good place to stop and view petroglyphs in Valley of Fire state park. There is a set of stairs to climb to the viewing platform.

There is a good sized parking lot

The museum was not busy so the man working there was able to share history with us, very interesting.

St Thomas Ghost Town is located about 7 miles southeast of Overton. From Las Vegas, about 65 miles northeast via Interstate 15 and the Valley of Fire Highway. It’s at the edge of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and does not require an entry fee to visit this site.

Founded on 8 Jan 1865 by Mormon settlers, St. Thomas had fewer than 500 residents, but was a popular stop along the Arrowhead Trail. The town and surrounding land was purchased by the Federal government in the 1930s to make way for Lake Mead. Most residents moved to nearby Overton. After the completion of Hoover Dam (then called Boulder Dam), the waters rose to cover the foundations of the town's buildings. The lake is now dried up and the remnants of St. Thomas rise out of the mud and they are now high and dry.

We drove there to check out the place yesterday and enjoyed a good 2.5 mile loop trail starting from the parking area. Nearly every home had a cistern, a round or square cement hole in the ground where residents would store water. While there was no indoor plumbing or electricity in St. Thomas, there was a school, post office, grocery stores, a church, an ice cream parlor and several garages that serviced the newly-invented automobile.

The Lake Mead website at nps.gov/lake/learn/nature/st-thomas-nevada.htm including a link to a downloadable field guide (nps.gov/lake/learn/nature/upload/St-Thomas-Field-Guide-FINAL.pdf) that will provide you with information on remains of the structures you'll find. If you go, I highly recommend either printing it out and taking it with you or bringing a smart phone or some other device along so you can read all about the site as you explore.

Rainbow Vista is truly an adventure in color! It's easy to imagine being an early in habitant of the area, as the landscape--except for the road--appears virtually untouched!

I flew specifically to Vegas just to see this. If you are like me you're gonna want to see it, no matter what! No review but some safety tips:
    1. Do not need 4WD. HOWEVER, strongly suggest higher clearance vehicle and really good (bigger) tires!
Getting up the mesa and across to the other side is on a well groomed gravel road. From there the road to DN is full of rock and many shard-like. Many places with my RAM pickup I drove slower and had to maneuver around some rocks. You could do it with a 2WD but VERY slow.

    2. Having read #1, do not go alone. Safety in numbers. Cell phone reception is spotty.

    3. No shade, it's desert. You'll need the obvious.

4 Wear sturdy shoes if you want to hike into the trenches.

    5. Enjoy the art, views and solitude .

A restroom and a few picnic tables sit between these tall rocks. It is a nice place to stop briefly.

This arch is a short drive from the campground and is along the road. There's not much to do here except look at the arch, but it makes a nice quick stop.

Callville Bay is inside the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, so there is the NPS entrance fee to the entire area. We just drove through, looking at what we could see from our vehicle. The water level is very low and the upper ramp is closed due to the receding water levels. The lower ramp is quite steep. It is on a Launch-At-Your-Own-Risk status. There is lots of parking and the restaurant appeared to be open. A Tip would be to call ahead to see if what you intend to do is possible. Pretty area. There is camping, hiking, and picnic Ramada's. Remember dangerously high summer temperatures, and that high winds and storms can arise without warning.
