The 13-mile drive has many parking lots for close views of several different scenes of the mountains and deserts. The welcome center is outstanding and the view in the back is well worth it. It costs $20, but if you're 62+ they offer a one-year national parks seniors pass for $20 to enter that day and save for future visits to parks. The next day, I used it for free to enter Lake Mead that would have cost $25.

Hoover Dam is a must if you in the area. It’s remarkable. You can park your RV and there is no cost. The views are so good. Very hot day we were there. Take lots of water, hat and sunscreen.
    I would highly recommend

When trail reports said it is a hard hike I didn't believe it.
It was definitely a challenging hike. You cannot get down and up without using ropes.
We did scrape ourselves up a bit on the rock so I would recommend wearing gloves, long sleeves and pants for the ropes. Hot springs were awesome.

Recommended excursion for those who also love to get their hands on the rock. Taken in August at midday, pay maximum attention to temperatures, don't be fooled by the name "Ice Box". The risk of heat stroke is very high and having a water reserve is not enough. The route, not a ring, is not long and the difference in altitude to be faced is suitable for everyone, apart from the last stretch where you must be confident with climbing. The path is well marked and even if the shape of the narrow canyon makes you think you can go off the track, it is definitely better to stay on the path. August 16, 2024 while returning with my family from a hike and climb in Ice box Canyon, about halfway through the trail, we heard cries for help. Following the sound, we slightly went off the trail and found a person who had lost the trail and who had not known how to return to the parking lot for over an hour. It was a young man, from Houston Texas, who was still struggling to walk and talk. After helping him find the trail again, with great difficulty, supported by us so that he would not fall, using his last energy, he managed to return to his car. As soon as he got into his car, however, he collapsed, losing complete consciousness. It was almost certainly severe heat stroke. Syncope, tachycardia, labored breathing and vomiting. Fortunately, a young hiker, who lives in the area, managed to call 911. Cell phones do not always have a connection in that area. By the time the ambulances arrived, it had been an hour since the Hudson Texas hiker had lost consciousness and despite the efforts of the paramedics, he had not recovered. We watched him get loaded into the ambulance, stabilized but still unconscious. We are obviously concerned about whether the heat stroke victim has fully recovered and wanted to thank the local hiker who was able to call 911, we couldn't with our phones, without whom the situation would have been much more difficult and serious.

I am sure 90% of people who visit Las Vegas do not drive up to Mt. Charleston which is great for traffic but they are really missing out on a spectacular 12000 foot mountain scene hardly 45 minutes from the strip. Awesome scenic drive with plenty of trails to hike, and a ski resort.
