- Alexander_KudrinSamara, Russia9,221 contributionsTo get here, you need to go to the adjacent museum buildings, and get free tickets there.
Inside there are very beautiful frescoes of the Assumption Cathedral, made around 1605. They cover a total area of 1080 m².
This is one of the few temples where the full cycle of wall paintings from the era of Boris Godunov has been preserved.
The fresco "Saint Christopher" is especially notable, one of the few ancient preserved frescoes, where this saint, according to the apocryphal version, is depicted with a horse's head.

- Alexander_KudrinSamara, Russia9,221 contributionsThe huge cathedral in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" is the dominant feature of the Sviyazhsky John the Baptist Convent.
This is a rare case when the main temple of the monastery is called differently than the monastery itself.
The cathedral was erected in 1896-1906 by the architect Fyodor Malinovsky.
Sviyazhsky Cathedral, built in the neo-Byzantine style, perfectly adorned the architectural landscape of the island.
In 1924, the monasteries of Sviyazhsk were abolished and state farms were organized on their territories.
In 2014, a solemn consecration of the restored church took place.
Inside it is spacious and light, there are beautiful oil paintings on the walls.

It is well structured into different sections, has lots of interesting multimedia and even large pieces of reading most ppl skip are weary well written. Definitely a city's "must see" place.Written June 3, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Alexander_KudrinSamara, Russia9,221 contributionsA small monastery in area, with three impressive and different in style temples.
The dominant feature of the Sviyazhsky John the Baptist Convent is, of course, the huge cathedral in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow" built in 1896-1906 by the architect Fyodor Malinovsky in the neo-Byzantine style.
The Church in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh is located next to the majestic Sorrowing Cathedral on the second floor of the refectory of the monastery, which was built in 1604.
The third building of the monastery - Trinity Church, is the oldest wooden building in Sviyazhsk, built in 1551.
This church was cut down in the Uglich district in the winter of 1550-1551, and in the spring of 1551 it was floated on the water disassembled to the site of the future city and reassembled.
Definitely recommend this monastery to visit!Written March 25, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Alexander_KudrinSamara, Russia9,221 contributionsNikolskaya refectory church stands to the left of the entrance. Its construction was led by Ivan Shiryai.
Work on the construction of the church from hewn limestone was carried out in 1555-1556 by the masters of the Pskov artel.
In the 17th century, a bell tower 43 meters high was erected nearby. You can climb here by paying an additional 200 rubles.
A narrow staircase leads up and you have to wait for the previous group to go down from above.
At the top, we were greeted by a strong gust of wind and disappointment that the windows were covered with fine metal mesh and it was difficult to take good pictures with the camera.
But from here there are really amazing views of the whole island!

Excellence comes to mind from the friendly service and attention to detail to the home made scrumptious cup cakes etc and quality organic teas. A wonderfully relaxing atmosphere and such a delightful way to spend one’s time.Written April 21, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Alexander_KudrinSamara, Russia9,221 contributionsRozhdestvenskaya Square is certainly not the same now as it was before the thirties of the last century, when several ancient cathedrals stood on it.
The cathedrals were demolished and now here, of course, deserted. Still broken flower beds, benches are standing.
There is also a water tower with an observation deck. A metal spiral staircase leads upstairs. From here opens a stunning view of all the sights of the island and Sviyazhsk.

It has lots of good souvenir stalls if they're your thing, some welcome cafes and amusements for kids like archery and swings
The vendors wear traditional gear and to be fair the place does have a fairly authentic market feel.
Don't linger too long , get back among the magnificent churches and monasteries - the real reason to be on Sviyashk!

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Alexander_KudrinSamara, Russia9,221 contributionsA small monument to the victims of repression welcomes guests of the island immediately after climbing the stairs to the monastery.
It stands at the wall of the Sviyazhsky Mother of God - the Assumption Monastery, where mass graves were discovered.
The monument is a vertical stone obelisk 2.6 meters high with a bronze relief and a sculpture in the form of a bird directed upwards.
As conceived by the author, the composition embodies the dramatic and tragic Russian history of the 20th century.
The opening of the monument took place on October 30, 2011.Written August 30, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Set in lovely gardens with a stunning view of the lake behind, is a beautiful church.
However it is not open to be visited. Still well worth seeing if you are on the island, it really is quite magnificent.Written July 5, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It mixes immersion in true preserved 3D excavation of XVII century tatar village with various precious findings and huge animated panorama of the village everyday life.
