Just after entering the US from Canada, this hidden gem is a perfect easy short hike that was wheelchair accessible to see a beautiful fall.

This was our last stop before leaving Minnesota and crossing into Canada on the Lake Superior Circle Tour. There is a beautiful interpretive center right near the parking lot. The half-mile trail to the high falls is an easy hike and totally worth it! We arrived fairly early in the morning, so there weren't many people. I even saw a fox on my walk! The falls has some nice observation decks to view the falls, and Canada is on the other side. Definitely a must stop that can be enjoyed by all ages and many abilities.

We discovered this national monument quite by accident while we were driving the north shore of Lake Superior, and I'm so glad we did. It's fascinating and well laid out, and the staff in period costumes are extremely knowledgeable about the history. We spent a couple of hours there and would gladly have taken longer, if we had had more time. For anyone with an interest in history, this is quite a gem.

You can visit two falls at Grand Portage on the Pigeon River- High Falls and Middle Falls. High Falls has unforgettable views and is well visited. Middle Falls is not very well know but worth the visit. It is a challenging hike.

Middle Falls is a twenty feet high waterfall. We first climbed a steep ridge to a scenic overlook with a wonderful view of Lake Superior. The best part of this long steep hike were the trees- the winding paths through mature aspen, birch and spruce.

The trail is very steep in places. You have to climb over 300 feet vertically each way. Beware of loose slippery rocks and tree roots- I slipped on these a few times.

This is not a hike for young children, older people or faint of heart or those people in poor health.

We measured our hike to be 5.5 miles RT if you include the High Falls. Is it worth it? Most definitely yes. Don’t do this and Devils Kettle on the same day unless you are an avid hiker.

There are multiple different ways to get to Isle Royale National Park with multiple boats and seaplanes from multiple places. However, there is only one way to see the entire island by circumnavigation and that is the Voyageur II from Grand Portage. Most of the boats listed on Isle Royale come from Michigan, either Houghton or Copper Harbor and go to only Rock Harbor. There is another boat that does go from Grand Portage but it only takes you to Windigo. Finally there are seaplanes from Michigan and Minnesota that will take you to either Rock Harbor or Windigo. The only way to see boat developed locations on Isle Royale is the Voyageur II.

You start in Grand Portage with an early departure at 7:30 to begin the open water stretch between Minnesota and the Island. In 2 hours you arrive at Windigo on the western side of the island for a brief stop to unload most of the passengers as many arrive here and hike to the other side, Rock Harbor, to be picked up. It is nice to have a brief stop to see Windigo and get a picture with the sign. You then leave Washington Harbor for the 4 hour sail to Rock Harbor around the north side of the island. We did make a stop to unload passengers at McCargo Cove, which spelled like a Christmas tree farm and was 20 degrees warmer than the open lake. Finally we made it around Blake Point, the easter tip and into Rock Harbor.

You spend the night here, I was at the Rock Harbor Lodge. In the morning you leave at 8:00 Central, 9 on the island, to begin the sail home. We made a stop at Daisy's Farm and got to see the Rock Harbor Lighthouse before going to open water. It was rough seas and misty so we did not see much until rounding the east side of the island to go in Washington Harbor to pick up passengers. We then sailed the 2 hours across the lake back to Grand Portage in a thick fog.

While it was a lot of time on the boat, it was a great way to see the island and so many of its locations, especially if you don't have long to hike. Dress warm, as even at the end of June time on the boat is cold. Lake temperature was 49 so the boat is about the same. In addition the bow has wind and much colder; however, you can sit on the stern where it is considerably warmer and see the island. Again it is an experience unique to Isle Royale. I will also say, I live on the coast and love to be on the water so boating is fun for me. If you like boats and you want to see the entire island, this is your trip.

Carry water, insect repellent for swarms of mosquitoes. Take the left side os the loop for the shorter trail to the falls.

The trail starts wide then becomes narrow and bushy. It is rugged, with inclines and dips and portions with lots of roots. It has protruding small rocks as well.

Not as sunny but a hat is useful to drive away mosquitoes.

Reaching the beautiful falls and landscape on the banks is certainly worth the hike!!

Lovely day trip to Isle Royale. The booking system is a little archaic but does the job. The boat was cramped - they definitely fit as many people as they can. It’s also unfortunate that they don’t tell you anywhere that you have to pay to park your car until you get back from the trip - kinda shady. Got the job done though and overall fine.

Nice border store with pleasant staff and a wide variety of items reasonably priced for such a remote location.
