We visited the Heights for the expressed purpose of seeing and hearing the theater pipe organ. It is a beautifully renovated little neighborhood theater. The organ sounds fantastic.

It's been many years since I visited Kordiak Park so I stopped by to check it out. It's even better than I had remembered as a kid. As I walked around looking at the plaques, and then later researched online, I learned some interesting things. Albert A. Kordiak, the Anoka county commissioner in the 1950's, learned a land developer was going to clear what was called Peck's Woods and build houses. Kordiak wanted some of the land to retain its natural beauty by making it a park. He went to the developer and tried to buy land. A legal battle ensued but an agreement was finally reached. Because there was no parks department at the time, Kordiak and his dad mowed around some trees and built a picnic table at the future site. Legislation was finally passed in 1961 granting Anoka County the right to acquire land for parks through gifts, purchase and condemnations… and the park system was born. Kordiak was the first park in Anoka County. It sits on 29 acres. There's a one mile trail (part is on streets in the neighborhood) around Highland Lake. The park is dedicated to Anoka Co veterans of WWII and a howitzer cannon sits beside the plaque. A man-made waterfall has been built next to a large gazebo and near a playground area. The system now has over 11,000 acres that includes beaches, a wave pool, golf course, archery range, pavilions, and camp grounds. Thank you for your vision Mr. Kordiak.
