Lots of trails through the woods, a nature center with live animals, picnic tables, camping, and a boat ramp--all in Southern Maryland about 30 minutes from DC.
Then we visited the discovery center then took a couple trails around the park looking for flora and fauna and enjoying the fresh air.

Set upon Robert E Lees' parents former homesite, it is a wonderful park offering nature trails, picnic opportunities, boat launches and more.
Leesylvania State Park is my favorite place to "cool out" by the river watching all types of boats, or get my exercise on by walking or riding my bike.
Government Island Stafford, VA 9.4 mi away

It is a nature preserve as well as the historic site of a quarry used to build homes and buildings in the area, including Kenmore in Fredericksburg and the Aquia Church.
The Government Island nature trail is a beautiful breath taking scenic trail nestled in the heart of historic Aquia Harbor.

This is a beatiful but little-known state park with amazing hiking and outdoor activities.
This park is located along the Potomac River and is a great place for hiking even in the heat of the summer.

A few osprey nests throughout the park.
Only negative is that the trailhead at the park leading to these trails is not well marked.
Prince William Forest Park Triangle, VA 10.9 mi away

This place is a treasure for the beltway, a very large park with a big variety of hiking trails for scenery and history, and a nice variety of difficulty.
The park rangers can give you a map of the trails and offer a certificate for when you cover each and every trail in the park!
