What travelers are saying
- TMack82Worcester, MA248 contributionsWe had a Beautiful Day visiting Lighthouses. This was second on our visit. We first went to Port Head Light then came to this one. It was pretty windy out so walking on the breakwater was a little unnerving. It's located right on the college campus so it may seem weird driving to it. Great place to take pictures and take in the scenery.Written April 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jbrenzChicago, IL1,369 contributionsWhat a cute little lighthouse! Was with a friend who lives in Portland and was showing us around and she brought us to Bug Light. I mentioned the name and she said it was “cute as a bug.” Very nice park around the lighthouse. It was great that it was dog friendly for my group, but I just wish people would abide by the rules and keep their dogs on a leash. There was one guy who was letting his dog run all over the place and if we were not paying attention and going very slow in the parking lot, we could’ve hit him. It’s a shame when one careless person could possibly ruin it for others. But the lighthouse is adorable, some history at the park, and a view of Fort Gorges from shore!Written December 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - P & G SAnkeny, IA963 contributionsThis cute lighthouse is on a walking path and is easily accessible by most. The path is paved but to get to the lighthouse is a little uneven.Written December 26, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CPASteveTallahasseeTallahassee108 contributionsThe 5 star review does not do this museum justice. Most of the artifacts are donated by the men that lived the experience. The gentleman that founded the museum and most of the volunteers are vets that served and donated some of the items. They will give you a guided tour and absolutely take advantage of that as the stories make the displays come alive. This is more than a museum but a living time capsule. I’ve been to bigger museums but nothing like this.Written May 20, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- NHjoSaco, ME7,967 contributionsWe went to the nearby and very popular Scratch Bakery and came here to eat our bagels and pastries. It's a quiet beach with some nice scenery -- Casco Bay, islands, lighthouses, boats -- and is near the Spring Point Shoreway Trail. It's off the beaten path, so to speak.Written March 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Stay3138473 contributionsRan across this nice little museum while checking out lighthouses nearby . Nice collection of artifacts regarding the lighthouses and other historical pieces related to the area. Wonderful informative volunteer staff. Enjoyed chatting with them.Written October 15, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- BenjaminParis, France284 contributionsNext to the Bug Light Park stands a this memorial to the shipyards that produced Liberty Ships during World War II. This memorial comes with a lot of interesting historical information on what happened in the 1940s. I learned a few things that I didn't know (from my European perspective on what happened 80 years ago), and I definitely recommend a stop at this place. As a side note, the memorial (and the Bug Light Park close to it) has a free parking.Written August 23, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NHjoSaco, ME7,967 contributionsThis 1808 fort was active during the War of 1812 through World War II. The scenery surrounding it is spectacular -- the caisson-style Spring Point Ledge Light, Casco Bay, a view of downtown Portland, a few islands, and of course the Southern Maine Community College campus.Written March 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alyssa P1 contributionWe booked Island Dog Brewing for our wedding welcome event. IT served as the perfect venue for friends and family to come and hang out on the Friday night before the wedding. Plenty of space, games, and a fun atmosphere. The owner and bartenders were so flexible and friendly. Leading into the event, they continually checked in with us to make sure everything was all set. We were able to rent out the space after it closed to the public and had so much fun! The beer was also really good- HIGHLY recommend the pumpkin beer! - William LSandown, NH1,030 contributionsWell first before we got on the hwy we were a bit hungry so we stopped in and explored the food court. Good call and beats the drive thru. I used to bike here from Gorham and dine at York Steakhouse. Memories.Written January 19, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Linda CNashville, TN162 contributionsThe Greenbelt Walkway starts at the Wainwright Rec Complex and ends in Bug Light Park. Plenty of parking and restrooms at the Wainwright Complex - and a park mid-way thru the walkway - then we saw picnic tables at Bug Light Park - and jiffy Johns - no running water. The walkway is paved and fairly well marked - we made a wrong turn at Broadway, riding on a sidewalk, but turned around and got back on the right path! Without the wrong turn, the route is 5.6 miles each way. The lighhouse was a nice find and there is a memeorial to Liberty Ships that were built in South Portland for WWII. The walkway has some bumps from roots and some of the posts to keep motorized traffic off the path are rather close in places (at least for a bicycle rider or a wide stroller) We enjoyed our ride.Written June 26, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ktfaganSouth Portland, ME24 contributionsThis path along the shoreline is one of my favorite walking paths for early evening strolls. Great views of the islands of Casco Bay, and easy access to the sandy beach below!Written June 9, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NHjoSaco, ME7,967 contributionsI like walking in cemetries, especially in autumn when the trees are at peak foliage. There was a section of dozens of small slab stones marking the graves of nuns, which isn't something you see every day. I'm still amazed by all the Celtic cross headstones there, some of which are ornately carved or very tall.Written October 19, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NHjoSaco, ME7,967 contributionsI stopped by to try the John Henry nitro milk stout, which a friend had raved about. I love stouts, and this was one was great! I also tried the Preble mango kettle sour, which was good. It's a small tasting room but tastefully done, and there's a large fenced-in backyard with chairs (including rockers), picnic tables, and a firepit. They also offer ginger and root beer for the kids. It's in a mixed residential/industrial area right off Route One, with suburban homes across the street, which is a bit different from the typical brewery/tasting room. Friendly service.Written May 28, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- NHjoSaco, ME7,967 contributionsJust went to the annual art fair in the park and found that the park looks a lot nicer in summer than it did during the cold, rainy spring. The lilypads in the pond are very picturesque and the flowers look great, especially the corner enclosed granite area with wooden benches and a beautiful flower arrangement. The white gazebo is quintessential New England. Lots of cute brown ducks, which the kiddies love.Written August 10, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
