We visited the small gallery to see the current special exhibit of Scenes of Maine showing works by artists with a connection to Maine. There were original oil and watercolor paintings depicting the ocean, waterfronts, coves, marshes, rural scenes, and so on. Also on display were beautiful bronze sculptures and pottery. Several works by well-known artist Richard Eckard were shown. We were surprised that a lot of the art was affordable, unlike some galleries in downtown Portland. We talked to the owner, who explained the history of the gallery and said the exhibits change on a monthly basis. We'll definitely be back.

I hadn't been here in a while, and it was like discovering it anew. I especially like the pottery, glassware and jewelry. There are so many creative art pieces.

The Gem Gallery is a collective gallery of island based artists, where even the year round folks can find unique jewelry, pottery, paintings, and sculptures you won't see anywhere else.

Casco Bay Artisans (CBA) is definitely worth a visit. The art in this lovely gallery has been beautifully curated. There is something for everyone. Gallery Owner, Jen Swartz, is both knowledgable and welcoming. You won't want to miss this special space. It's truly a unique experience.

This was the best art gallery I visited in Portland. It has an excellent variety. It's not all seaside-and-boat paintings (not that there's anything wrong with those) like some of the other galleries. The paintings and sculptures are modern and lively and they are mainly representational though there are some abstract works as well. The prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly but not all over you, and I stayed quite a while enjoying the art. I really wanted to buy something there but I just bought something on my last trip so my art budget was busted!

The collection changes frequently and the sculpture garden is cool. It's a nice 15 minute diversion all within walking distance of some fun restaurants: Bogusha's, Pickles and Po Boys, Susan's Fish and Chips and Ginza Town to name a few...

While exploring Portland, we came across this great gallery. I believe that it is the largest private gallery in the city. The displayed art represents all genres and subject matter. The owner Susan Roux is a delightful person who loves talking about art, even if you are not buying. She also took us to her studio, where she teaches and showed us her current unfinished piece that was beautiful. If you like art, a must stop.

After happening upon and visiting Arcana, I went to nearby Fore River Gallery where I found hand-made jewelry and the expected fine art.

One very different type of art was by an artist who made collages of sizable insects such as large beetles.

    Another artist made bead jewelry.

An artwork I particularly liked was a very realistic landscape painting on two canvases. The top canvas depicted a bridge that appeared to be a railroad trestle. The lower panel was a pair of parallel train tracks which lined up exactly with train tracks running under the trestle in the panel above. I thought the composition was quite clever.

I rate Arcana at 4.50 and can recommend a visit.

The reason for the delay in submitting this review was due to a months-long loss of my ability to post photos with my reviews.

This gallery has an amazing collection of contemporary works by over 50 Maine artists. There are original paintings, sculptures, and other pieces. Some of our favorites were the acrylic paintings with nautical themes by Steve Rogers that are so realistic that they look like photos, and Whitney Heavey's oil paintings of the New England coast.

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews for this place, seeing that it's in Old Port and there were tourists from two cruise ships when we went. The pottery and glassware are beautiful and very high quality (with prices to match). We especially loved the brown stoneware and the colorful glass buoys, but everything was exquisite. All the items are crafted by Maine artists.

We were amazed at the variety of products designed by Angela Adams. So much to buy, so little time!! As beautiful as her products are, the customer service is the real star of this gallery/showroom. It was a real highlight of our vacation!
