Lake Pukaki Canterbury Region 17.3 mi away
#2 of 167 Nature & Parks in Canterbury Region
The 50 min drive from Twizel to the Mt Cook village was the highlight of our trip, the scenery is beautiful, snow capped mountains all around, the huge lake, the streams and the road into the village is just amazing.
What a great view of a magnificent lake with blue water surrounded by snow clad mountains, Mount Cook overlooking the Lake with clear reflections of mountains in the Lake.

Lake Tekapo Lake Tekapo
#1 of 6 Nature & Parks in Lake Tekapo
A picturesque lake, with nearby ski fields, excellent walks and bike trails, Mt John Observatory and star gazing, plus excellent food and beverage outlets.
Beautiful turquoise water, gorgeous wild lupins, snow-capped Southern Alps, and stunningly dark skies which allow you to see more stars than I have ever seem in my life in just one night.

Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier walks Aoraki Mount Cook National Park (Te Wahipounamu)
#3 of 9 Nature & Parks in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park (Te Wahipounamu)
It's a 20 minute hike up some steps (tiring but do-able) to see a breathtaking view of the mountains, covered in snow and the blue lake beneath with the last of the icebergs melting away.
Take 30/40 mins for walking steps and be surprised by a beautiful bright blue lake with ice rocks and the Tasman glacier.

The area is very scenic and peace full, accommodation abound and the fishing, kayaking is great.
If you are lucky to catch the odd brown trout, rainbow trout or salmon then this is the cherry on top of the icing.
Lake Alexandrina Lake Tekapo
#4 of 6 Nature & Parks in Lake Tekapo
The Lake is surrounded by low hills which has a backdrop of mountains often covered in snow, willow trees line the lake shore so there is always a shady spot to stop and take in the view.
Easiest is to drive all the way to the main camping ground outside it and go for a walk around the lake or hike up the various hills to gain a view from atop.
