What travelers are saying
- Gene R JSilver Spring, MD10,795 contributionsAfter touring the sights of Council Bluffs; Golden Spike Monument, 1869 Dodge House & 1939 Lincoln Monument, we parked near the 1890 Bayliss fountain and entered the basement of the 1905 Carnegie Library building. This 2003 museum provides an extensive history of building the 1907 mile railroad extending from Council Bluffs to Sacramento. Surveying, grading and laying the 4’ 81/2” gauge track over a land dominated by buffalo, Indigenous tribes and mountains. Further halls showed the expansion over the decades with telegraph, town building, bandits/police, passenger travel with Pullman Cars and fine dining.
This excellent museum ends with descriptions of modern railroad operation and maintenance.Written September 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ARTJPLLondon, UK360 contributionsNice monument with great views of the Missouri River and Omaha Airport. Thee were picnic tables so you could have a break and a bite to eat. The monument is behind a gate so not open 24 hours (hours as of Aug’24 were 8am to 10pm). Uber driver who claimed to be a local had never been and stated no idea this existed so it doesn’t seem to be well advertised. As this opened earlier in the morning, started day here then transited to the museums and historical houses downtown to arrive at 10am when they started to openWritten September 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ARTJPLLondon, UK360 contributionsThe building is very compact, meaning you can visit in an hour or so. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like for inmates - there wasn’t air conditioning as the building is preserved as is and quite warm (there are fans in certain places but with global warming and all, it was good visitors were coincidentally arriving in timed visits). This is right next door to the Union Pacific Museum and easy walk to Bayliss Park and cafes/restaurants just down the road. Downtown Council Bluffs is served by Omaha bus so possible to have a day trip over the state line.Written September 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ARTJPLLondon, UK360 contributionsEntry is via the neighboring Beresheim House (bankers for the Dodge’s) which has the gift shop and a spacious room to watch an introductory video. The Beresheim House is also beautiful and well preserved. The volunteer docents offer a guided tour and a self-guided option was available but we opted for the guided tour. Our docent was excellent. Knowledgeable and sprinkled in personal stories as our friendly group chatted about coincidental mutual experiences. If attempting to visit without a car, this is within walking distance of downtown Council Bluffs (Union Pacific Museum housed in former Carnegie Library), Squirrel Cage Jail and cafes/restaurants. Downtown is served by Omaha bus so possible for a day trip across the state line.Written September 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jennifer POmaha, NE94 contributionsDittmar's is a very lovely place to go for a fall visit! Tons of apple varieties to choose from and lots of fun activities to do for kids (tractor rides, corn maze, huge play area). They do several weekend events and have turned themselves into a local gathering spot. Good wine and food and fun atmosphere!Written September 10, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Terry HBrookfield, WI343 contributionsStayed in an adjacent hotel and walked the floor of the casino after having a quick dinner at the sports book bar and grill. I'm not a gambler but the place was well organized and had a full array of mechanical games as well as tables. People looked like they were having fun. Smoke removal system could be a little better.Written October 29, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Vork TravelSaint Louis, MO337 contributionsThe brewery was pretty close to our hotel so we walked over to enjoy some beer. We had a flight, and they were all pretty good! They offer a lot of variety so if you like beer, I you will likely find one that suits you. - Jason R9 contributionsAmazing for kids! Even if you aren't into coral or fish, top place to go to see the ocean. Kids and family both love it! - JrnyJunkieCleveland, OH958 contributionsWe saw this park and fountain basically as a drive by. All around the park was metered parking, so we just didn't plan on spending that much time to get out and walk around, but we did stop to admire the lovely fountain.Written June 27, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
