What travelers are saying
- OwdWillyBishops Castle - England40 contributionsGullfoss really was spectacular to see. When we visited large parts of the falls were frozen which made it even better.
Just make sure you take your thermals as when it's cold and the wind blows you'll feel it, but this was great and part of the experience.Written March 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country ( width of 82 feet and a drop 200 ft). A single or double rainbow is visible on sunny days. You can get drenched if they go too near the waterfall, again due to the spray. According to legend, the first Viking settler , Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. At the eastern side of the waterfall, hiking and trekking trail hoes up to the pass Fimmvörðuháls between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. A 430-step staircase leads up the slope to the top of the waterfall.
I visited this place on 20th Mar'23 as part of our Southern Iskand your. It was clear weather but very cold and icy wind blowing. The ground being icy, you need to be very careful to avoid slipping on the ice. We couldn't climb up the view point, tge steps were covered with ice and being very slippery.
The view of the fall was majestic. With icecles all around it was a treat to the eyes. The cascades of the fall flows as Skoga river
The river was almost frozen due to the cold weather. I could walk near the main cascade and got a majestic view. There is a small museum displaying local artifacts and traditions. There is a souvenir shop and a cafe as well.
A must visit spit in Iceland.

I would have liked to have walked behind it, but it was closed due to ice.Written March 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Geyser Waterfall hot springs and even had time to feed the beautiful Icelandic horses. Our guide Aga and driver Peter were superb with plenty of local knowledge about everything iceland together with quirker sense of humour 😀 well worth the tripWritten March 4, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RoddersSunderland, UK316 contributionsShort walk from car park to beach and amazing basalt rock formations, wander along the black "sand" peak into the shallow caves. Warned to be careful of the waves as they can suddenly come a long way up beach (use common sense).Written March 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Strokkur is a fountain type geyser located in a geothermal area besides Hvita River. It erupts every 10 to 15 minutes, and its usual height is 50 to 60 feet, and it has risen around 150 feet as well. The atea has various mud pools and smaller geysers as well. You can see steam coming out at various points across the area. An earthquake in 1789 opened the cracks that made these geysers.
I visited this place on 21st Mar'23 as part of our Golden Circle tour. It was cloudy weather, very cold and icy wind blowing at 45 km. The ground being icy, we had to be very careful to avoid slipping on the ice. There was number of points on the way from where steam was oozing out continuously. We waited near the geyser, and it erupted after a 20-minute wait. But wind being very strong, it could reach good height.
There are good restaurants in the area and souvenir shops as well
A must visit spot in Iceland.

- Mdc979Boston, MA43 contributionsWe almost skipped this stop on our way back from Rynisfjara Beach. I'm glad we visited it. The drive up and down was a little scary going around the corners of the mountain, but manageable. We walked the upper path around the lighthouse and saw some great views. I don't think this has a WC.Written March 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jay N102 contributionsWhat a great day it was to drive around what is referred to as the golden circle and stop at the geyser. We were not there for that long, but saw the geysir erupt several times. Great photo opportunity and fun to watch. Remarkably, unlike so many other places in the world, there was absolutely no charge.Written January 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jessica K80 contributionsThis canyon blew our minds! We walked all the way to the top and the view just kept getting better and better! Well worth the hike uphill. it’s hard to describe what it was like looking down into this canyon. All I can say is GO! This was one of the ultimate highlights on a trip that was full of highlights.
It was a bit of a challenge for some of our group. So I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who has mobility challenges.Written March 21, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Looks are deceiving, doesn't look large until you spot a few people walking on it like ants. - hhdmiamiMiami, FL28 contributionsThis part of the trip was one of our best experiences in Iceland and it was well worth the long hike. Because it is not an actual attraction there is no website, phone, and it never closes so people go there at all hours. The parking lot is large enough for everyone. Just follow the trail. It's about 70 minutes there and 60 minutes back. You will see bubbling mud and sulfur pits along the way. The stream goes through several "pools". The top one has the hottest water and the one at the bottom has the coolest water. Choose the "pool" you like best. There are no restrooms or charging stations. Bring towels, water and snacks. Take trash home with you. Enjoy the stream and views.Written February 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris LNorthampton, UK392 contributionsThis waterfall is a really unique experience with the short walk through stream to get inside the cave where you are right up close and personal with the waterfall.
Definitely plan with waterproof shoes / coat etc, it’s a very special experience - ideal waterfall to propose by as it’s less crowded…and she said yes 🙌 💍Written February 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - BeziLondon, UK629 contributionsDepending on the time of year you do this walk, it can probably be nice and dry or, in March (and I suspect April) incredibly muddy!
The first part of the walk is fine, it's on a gravel trail. Once you get to the bit where you have to cross the steam, it gets messy!
My first tip would be to wear decent hiking boots, don't wear your nice shoes as they will get ruined. The mud was ankle deep, I suspect it could get deeper as the ground was still partly frozen.
There is no way around the muddy stretch and it lasts all the way until you reach the river.
Tip number 2 is to take a walking pole if you have one as mud is very slippery!
Tip 3 is to do the walk in the morning and pray the ground is still frozen as when the sun comes out it will get muddier!
It's a great walk up to the falls, once you get to the river and start walking towards the falls it is less muddy although there are still patches that you will have to wade through. It's a fast flowing river so be careful if you have small children.
We enjoyed the walk as we had hiking boots but I felt sorry for some people unprepared for the the mud!Written March 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
