We saw a little VW coming down as we were going up, and you could see the look of regret on the driver’s face.

We did walk up the steep steps to the top and marveled at the views of the roaring stream feeding the falls, the lush green hills, the sheep grazing on the steep slope, and the distant views of the coast.
Easily gotten to... good viewing from the bottom of the falls, a short hike up stairs to a viewing platform at the top, beautiful hiking with long to short hikes from the top... my esteemed spouse and I were there...

The varied landscape colors, moulins and crevasses was something to see! Thank you Arctic Adventures for the exhilarating, wonderful once in a lifetime experience!
We booked a walk through a local guide company and they equipped us with hard hats and safety (climbing) harnesses and crampons - which enhanced the experience as we felt prepared and safe.

Stumbled on this short walk after quick conversation with a restaurant staff person - so glad we went, easy and quick drive off the main road, easy walk, stunning views.
It makes a great stop on the way to other destinations and from the parking space you can take a short walk up the hill to stretch your legs.

Visitors are advised to never turn their back on the waves, and keep a safe distance of at least 30 meters.
We were told never turn your back on the waves, and keep a safe distance of at least 30 meters.

It's an easy hike and along the way you'll see 2 more "blue" waterfalls.
Much improved hiking trail, worth the effort!

Note: it's quite a long walk on the wooden pathway from the changing rooms so if it's cold, be prepared or bring a waterproof bag (for rain) to put near the actual entrance to the hot springs.

And if you can walk up to the hill that has a view to all waterfalls...And of course wear a raincoat when you walk near and behind the waterfalls as well as a protection for camera.
Although there is a small parking fee of about $10, this waterfall is well worth it as you can walk behind it!

I do suggest listening to the guides, and the suggestions of others to stay away from the water, it looks calm, but can be unpredictable.
Definitely worth a stop to see such an amazing beach!

Iceland doesn’t have a lot except beautiful expanses ”endless sky, amazing sunsets”, extraordinary beauty”waterfalls, black sand beaches, geysers”, perfect relaxation”hot springs, warm pools, hot tubs, great after...
The three main attractions of Thingvellir National Park, Geysir and Gullfoss are really worth a visit and there are many detours that you can do as well.

From here you can walk up to the lighthouse OR... like us, take the car on a bumpy gravel road up the mountain.
There is a parking area at the top where you can walk up to the point where the lighthouse is sited.

The walk to the hot springs is quite a strenuous upward path (take proper shoes) but definitely worth it for the sights along the way and the warm water river bathing at the top (really keen hikers can go further...
The trail is well marked and you pass bubbling hot pools along the way and can savor a vista framed by hills and the steam from geothermal pools.

First stop on the golden circle tour and its awesome, the snow covered landscape is magnificent and a pleasure to soak up the environment, a wander of the beaten track was advised but several folks were trying so...
I would try and explore this and indeed the other highlights of the golden circle by yourself if you can though as then you can take your time and spend as long or as little as places such as this as you like.

Strokkur

Geysir
#22 of 145 things to do in South Region
A wonderful natural phenomenon and although the Icelandic folk have made it a tourist attraction with a hotel, restaurant and gift shop they have also managed to retain the natural beauty and appeal.
There is one large Geysir that spews our hot steaming water every few minutes which is unbelievable they see but you need to stand near the left hand side fence to get the best views and photos and the whole erupt...

Definitely worth a visit - the site is interesting and you can walk around both erupting and dormant but steaming geysers - it's tempting to want to touch the water but it's often hotter than boiling so make sure...
The Strokkur geysir erupts every few minutes, throwing up a spectacular fountain, there are warm pools of blue water, the ground is literally steaming with bubbling mud pools and there are walks all around them to...

Cool place and free popcorn.

You have to go along a gravel track to this fall and can only see it from above but it is a two part fall on Iceland's longest river so lots of water.
Hidden down below a bridge it is hard to tell how large and powerful this falls is but it is worth a stop.

The top was windy and fairly populated, but it really gave a great view of the town and harbor and the extent of the lava flow from the 1973 eruption.
From the top you get a great view of the town, the additional land that the island gained as a result of the eruption and the surrounding sea.

Our plan for the day was to see the sights on the “golden circle” drive, and this was our second stop of the day, about a 10 min drive from our first stop was the Thingvellir National Park Visitor Center.
From Oxararfoss it is then maybe 1k along an easy path past the Parliament stone to the ‘main’ area.

You're likely stopping to see Skogafoss waterfall anyway, so if you have an extra 30 minutes definitely see Kvernufoss waterfall too!
This was a very last minute decision to take this easy hike and we are so glad we did.
