- Ashley Z35 contributionsSo neat! Check out the 2nd floor and library! Oh the lake too! - markmillieramonNaperville, IL890 contributionsWhere else but Oakbrook would have a museum dedicated to gems and precious stones. A smallish but thoughtful venue that is home to exotic and possibly priceless pieces of art. Beautifully sculpted vases of jade from China compete with intricate mosaics from Italy. Videos show how each are created by master craftsmen. Minerals and fossils are included as well as a wall of snuff bottles from last century. The star of the show is a jade temple about five feet tall that is representative of the Forbidden city in Bejing. My wife and I learned quite a bit about how these wonderful works of art are created and the patience required for such a detailed endeavor. I admire anyone who can look at a lump of marble and make something beautiful from it. That is a true super power.Written September 24, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- jeff77664Downingtown, PA610 contributionsSpent around 30 minutes or so when passing through area in September. The museum was open and had a couple of floors to look through. Some nice exhibits in museum. The road was under construction so could not walk underneath from parking lot to museum. A great stop if passing through area that is free.Written October 13, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PROF_CONSULTANTCarpentersville, IL362 contributionsThis is a great place to start looking at art and getting an idea for what you want in your home. Bought a large Chinese seriagraph here awhile back and sometimes go back to see what else they have. Wait for a Sale. Do not pay list. They usually have some great pieces that cater to various tastes (various international artists). Fine Art never goes out of style.Written February 10, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

That night was cold and it started to rain which made the night even colder. The path was short and the lights presentation were pretty. This is perfect for families. There’s lot of spots to take selfie.Written January 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ImmerWandernPalos Park, IL13,287 contributionsThe nature sanctuary offers visitors pleasant strolls around a pond and through prairie, a canoe launch site on Salt Creek and a biking trail, and connects to the larger Bemis Woods and Salt Creek Woods nature preserves.
Over 80 years ago this 40-acre piece of land was dedicated to horse/cattle grazing and was bought by the Dean family (of the Dean food products conglomerate). The family donated the land to the Oakbrook park district in 2005. Ecological restoration was performed and completed in 2009. Despite the relatively small size severe different ecosystems are found on this territory: oak savannah, wetland, pond and prairie. A variety of wildlife can be spotted including deer, fox, raccoons, possum and turtles.
Salt Creek apparently is technically a river and is open for canoeing. Water access is possible at the Dean Nature Sanctuary. The water was very calm and shaded. We did not see turtles, but saw 2 pairs of Canadian geese and a pair of mallard ducks. The tranquil scene was unfortunately spoiled by the constant and loud road noise coming from the I-294 on the other side of Salt Creek.
The large pond just across from the parking lot was actually the result of excavation of clay used in the construction of the 1-294 almost 60 years ago. While we were there one of the fishermen landed a catch. The meadow around the pond had large swathes of yellow wildflowers, mostly consisting of yellow rocket but also Golden Alexanders. The prairie to the west had just started growing back.
We rounded the pond and finally explored the west side of the sanctuary, away from the noise of the I-294. We never did see deer, fox, possum or raccoons but there were a lot of birds to be spotted. In addition to the above waterfowl we spotted tree swallows swooping everywhere, ubiquitous robins and red-winged blackbirds, a Hairy woodpecker, Eastern bluebird, Eastern phoebe, brown-headed cowbird, and Savannah sparrow. The standouts were the bright-orange Baltimore oriole and American goldfinch. Several of the birds would perch on tall dead stems sticking out above the meadow using these as a lookout for prey.Written May 11, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were there for my son’s birthday and everything was great other that after bocce we had a dinner reservation for 7:30. We got to the table at 7:45 from the court and were told the kitchen was closing in 15 min. As this was a birthday celebration(which they knew) it would have been helpful to have had that information ahead of time. We were a group of 10 adults so we would have stayed longer.
Other than that the evening was a lot of fun.Written December 18, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
