- Christian WinsteadLakeland, FL2 contributionsMy wife grew up near the area and has toured the Hegler Carus Mansion in the past. She scheduled us for the whole house tour which runs between 3.5 and 4 hours. We enjoyed every minute and found the tour to be worth evert penny. Our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable. She did a great job keeping us entertained while also teaching the fascinating history of the home.Written February 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Carl A1 contributionThe boat ride was not to exciting but the history behind the I&M canal was extremely fascinating to hear as presented by the tour guide. Great job.Written July 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- S F6 contributionsExcellent park. We stopped to let the kids play during a long drive. They had lots to do to tire them out. Love the turf rather than grass or rubber. It was much easier to navigate. It was great to see the accessible options. Restrooms were very roomy and clean. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have more shaded area, especially at lower level. Our 2 yr old and 4 yr old both loved it.Written September 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Carla V319 contributionsI gave this a Very Good rating but parts are really just "poor" as the gravel trail is not maintained well between Ottawa and Seneca - single bike path with weeds on path not mowed and high weeds close to the edge. Path has many curves and is labeled this way, with the high weeds, are to see ahead at times. And, came upon huge tree limb after tree limb that we had to lift our bikes over. Also a couple of trees are resting across the path at angles so had to maneuver under them. At one time there had to of been funding to make this trail as the mile markers are fantastic and always nice to have when biking!
Once we got to Seneca, the path was maintained or it had us on roads. On the edge of Seneca there is a railroad crossing as the trail goes along a road - homes on both sides of the tracks and only access out. Well as we were returning on our 40+ miles bike ride, a freight train was parked, blocking the road. We called out but no railroad personnel responded. Waited for about 5 minutes and then a van came driving up from one of the houses and an unhappy lady got out. Seems this happens all of the time. We each called the railroad to complain but were only told, if no medical emergency then considered an "inconvenience." So, we had to climb onto the freight train and over, handed our bikes over the train coupling and biked back into Seneca where we talked to the local police. Seems a new Illinois law allows freight trains to sit for any amount of time with no consequences.
The section we biked on in August, mostly shaded and no water in the canal. Did see parts of the Illinois River.
Enjoyed seeing and photographing the Hogan Grain Elevator (mid-1800s) (picture) in Seneca and an unusual wooden bridge.
May bike another section of this in the future!Written August 16, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's faboulous for Smallmouth bass and I've caught 4 pounders from here. The creek also contains bluegill, catfish, pickerel, bullhead, carp, sheephead, suckers, creek chub, and shad. You'll also find a variety of turtles and snakes, along with frogs and crayfish which you can use for bait. Beware of poison ivy. The creek is dependant on rain to maintain depth and good fishing.Written January 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
