So glad we decided to do a tour at the Blair Brothers Distillery in Galena, IL! The tour was very informative and fun! We also had a chance to meet and talk with Matt and Mike-the brothers-and to hear more about their journey to get to where they are today. This is a must part of your visit to Galena!

P.T. Murphy's show is 5 STAR entertaining at its best! It is a must see show if you are in Galena. P.T. Murphy is not only an awesome magician due to his amazing sleight of hand technique and showmanship, he is charming and invites you in to his world through his imagination, life stories, and a wonderful sense of humor. His unique, intimate theater allows him to interact with the audience in a way that makes each and every one of those attending to feel special and noticed. My husband and I very much enjoyed every minute of the show! We'll be back! Susan and Lou (08-04-2022)

There are so many things to see and do in Galena, Illinois, that you need at least three days to enjoy all of them. How about starting one day with breakfast at Otto's Place, then walk up the hill to tour Ulysses S. Grant's home, then walk back down the hill to visit Grant Park, then walk across the bridge that spans the Galena River to downtown Galena? Be sure to take in all of Grant Park. Located at 615 Park Avenue, with a breathtaking view of Galena, it is a convenient location to have a picnic or take pictures of downtown Galena or watch the kayakers navigate along the river. The 3.5-acre park features a fountain, pergola, gazebo and pavilion. In addition, there are several historic cannons and monuments, including a statue of Ulysses S. Grant, the town's most famous citizen, a World War I German howitzer, a Spanish naval cannon and an 1861 Blakley cannon that delivered the first shot at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor to ignite the beginning of the Civil War. But if you're not into cannons or gazebos, you can just sit on a bench under a tree and enjoy the scenery. Isn't that what a vacation is all about?

We went to do the Alpine slide and Eagle zip line rides. They were great and reasonably priced. The worker at the Eagle was friendly and very social. The young lady at the top of the slide was very nice however the young men at the bottom manning the chairlift were less than enthusiastic.

Located at 1679 North Blackjack Road, off U.S. Highway 20, at the eastern gateway to the historic community of Galena, Horseshoe Mound is one of the most scenic properties in all of northern Illinois. Visitors can explore the 200-acre preserve, hike, picnic, learn about geology and enjoy a panoramic view of Galena, the Mississippi River and three states--Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. Open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, Horseshoe Mound has been open to the public since 2014. Thanks to a land acquisition in 2018, a new overlook, the Spiroff Overlook, which is located north on the trail from the main parking circle, is available to hikers. A trail now winds through a restored oak savanna and unique rock outcroppings to stunning views of the surrounding countryside, downtown Galena and beyond into Iowa and Wisconsin. A booklet is available at the kiosk that tells about the history, geology and natural wonders of Galena and the Driftless Area and its hills and valleys in Jo Daviess County that were formed during the last Ice Age.

I know photographic composition, and Geoffrey certainly has the talent and eye for photography. His Dad was very friendly and helpful. And we could simply good not leave without purchasing a piece. Surprised we did not come out with more. Buying Geoffrey's work is not charity. It's an investment.

Just about a ten minute drive from downtown Galena this vineyard makes a product that has always been a favorite of ours. This was our first visit to the source. The vines were across the street in the distance. The fermentation and bottling operation was housed next to the main house. The retail store was large and airy, chock full of liquid delights. The hostess was super friendly during our tasting and made our purchases even easier. Or was it the wine ? No tour of the process, at least none was offered. Maybe next time I'll ask.

My wife and I have toured the Washburne House State Historic Site on two occasions. It is one of the most interesting homes in Galena, Illinois, along with Ulysses S. Grant's house and the Belvedere Mansion. Located at 908 3rd Street, off Route 20, steps from the bridge that spans the Galena River and the entrance to downtown Galena, it was the home of Elihu Benjamin Washburne, a prominent Galena lawyer who served in the U.S. Congress during the Civil War and was U.S. Secretary of State and Minister to France under President Ulysses S. Grant. Washburne was close friends with Grant, another famous resident of Galena, and Abraham Lincoln. It was in the parlor of the Washburne house that Grant came on the night of the 1868 presidential election to learn that he had been elected. Constructed in 1844-1845, the 1 1/2-story building was built in the Greek Revival style and features a two-story porch with four fluted Doric columns. The guided tour includes the first floor and two second-floor bedrooms. The house is furnished to reflect the mid-19th century life of a well-to-do midwestern professional. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the house is open to the public from 1 to 4 on Friday and 10 to 1 on Saturday. Strange house, perhaps. But it is worth the slight annoyance. Just to stand in the room where Grant sat and learned he had been elected president is a thrilling experience.

Ted was an outstanding storyteller. He did a wonderful job weaving history and hauntings into stories that kept the attention of all ages. We did this on our first night in town and it was great to take the history with us as we visited downtown Galena and the surrounding area.

We did the Canopy and Challenge Course tours to celebrate our anniversary and both were excellent. Our guides (Nathan and Danielle on the Canopy and Sean and Brandon on the Challenge Course) were very knowledgeable, fun, and truly seemed to enjoy their work. The Canopy tour includes a rappel down from one of the towers and a Quick Jump free fall from the last tower, an interesting twist that other zip lines we have been on don’t have. We especially liked the Challenge course, there are multiple paths you can take each with varying degrees of difficulty. The group we were in included 5 kids ages 10 - 15 and our guides were very patient working with the younger ones. There are a couple of challenges that were extremely difficult but definitely worth the effort. We highly recommend Long Hollow.

It is a no-stop trolley tour. I’m not sure it is worth $20. But it was a nice activity since it was raining.
