- Becky BBradenton, FL140 contributionsI hadn’t been here since I was a child! Took the family today (2 adults, a teen and tween) and we had a great morning. About $85 plus we stopped for icecream. We did the self guided tour which was great. It was super hot but we expected it and came early. I forgot the grounds were so beautiful! Lush tropical plants mixed with specimens from all over, giant banyans and figs and orchids. We all loved it, even the kids.Written June 3, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Gator58New Port Richey, FL591 contributionsTypical science museum lots to do for children. Tanks of snakes & lizards great fossils a touch tank. - Cynthia V16 contributionsI had no idea this is part of a larger park with SO MUCH to offer. The museum itself is fantastic! Lots to look at and an interactive digital 'train you can drive'. I had no idea there was a ride on mini train there. It was pretty epic, $5 for adults to ride -not sure cost for kids. Parking at the park itself was $5 a day when I went.Written July 25, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mbabazi StephenKampala, Uganda14 contributionsMy wife and I signed up for the 12-days African Adventurous Tour (Midrange version) with Safari for all Steven was our driver and he took care of us from beginning to end. Steven was The Best! He always looked out for our best interest and made sure that everything we needed was taken care of throughout the entire trip even to the smallest details. Our trip was during the last 2 weeks of October 2015 so there were short rainstorms every day which only lasted for 30min to 1 hour. We seemed to get lucky with no rain on the days we went Chimpanzee and Gorillas trakking, which I'm so grateful because the main reason for taking this trip was to photograph the wildlife. This was my second time in East Africa and to see all of the Animals with my own eyes roaming freely was absolutely amazing! We paid extra to do the chimpanzee habituation experience in Kibale National Park which was worth every penny. We hiked for almost 2hrs to get to the chimpanzees and because we signed up for the habituation experience, we were able to be amongst the chimpanzees for a good solid 2hrs. The gorilla tracking was even more outstanding! Due to the water damaged roads to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest from the overnight rain, Steven took us to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Although the drive on the unpaved roads were rocky, Steven was a king of drifting with the 4x4 and got us to the trail that leads to the entrance of the Park. It was a moderate to strenuous 30min hike to get to the park entrance. Fortunately the park's rangers and trackers start at 7:30am to locate the family of gorillas prior to our hike so we only had to hike for a little over an hour to reach the gorilla family. We were able to get about 5-7ft away from the gorillas (3 silverbacks, 1 female, 1 juvenile and 1 20week toddler). These gorillas were the most gentle giants and so entertaining to watch! Our other activities include a boat ride along the Kazinga Channel where we were able to see an elephant, several species of birds, so many hippos and a crocodile. Took a boat ride around a few of the 29 islands in the beautifully Lake Bunyonyi. The accommodations were excellent and the meals were delicious every where we stayed. The customer service everywhere we stayed were top services as well. I enjoyed every bit of this trip and I consider it the best trip of my life so far. I highly recommend all travellers to travel with safari for all as they are trustworthy and provide great clients service!Written September 21, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tiki220New Cumberland, PA57 contributionsThe planetarium was quite nice, but my 5-year-old grandson only lasted 20 minutes and lost interest, even though the man at the desk said he would like it. As an animal lover, I was disturbed by the condition of the cages and enclosures. One tank held two turtles, and the larger one was biting the smaller one relentlessly. I told the man at the desk, and he said it was territorial behavior and the little one would survive. Outside in the butterfly enclosure we saw 4 dead butterflies. The owls had no place to hide, and some of the cages for the other birds were way too small. It is a very nice facility with lovely grounds, but someone should investigate the living conditions of the wildlife.Written March 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CaptTroubleHudson, WI7,890 contributionsThis art center in Downtown Fort Myers is a 23,000 square foot Neoclassical Revival building built in 1933 on the site of the old fort. The columns on the front are made of limestone from the Florida Keys and the walls are embedded with coral and sea shells. I've never seen anything quite like it; it is very eye-catching!
In 1960, the building was converted into a Federal Court House, but in 1998 it was abandoned. It then suffered a lot of damage and many of the original fixtures were removed or destroyed. In 2003, a not-for-profit organization obtained a 99 year lease from the city and began renovations. In 2007, Berne Davis pledged $1 Million for restoration and the name of the building was changed in honor of the family's contribution. This is when renovation of the first floor began.
By the end of 2008, 10,000 square feet of the building had been restored. Another grant of $650,000 was received in 2012, and those renovations were completed in 2014. The building is currently used for arts education, music lessons, lectures, art exhibitions, and independent film screenings.
The enormous luminaria in the front of the building are lighted at night and are spectacular to see and walk around. They are covered in cut out words that narrate a story, and the words fall on the building and all around.
Its a spectacular building to see and it is wonderful that it was rescued.Written August 30, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Diane TElizabeth, IL158 contributionsAnother Time is more in line with our tastes than Timeless is. I particularly enjoy browsing the handmade earrings and necklaces. Their "moon and stars" pieces are so creative; I bought a pair of "mismatched" moon and stars earrings that I fell in love with. Recently, I bought a pair of drop earrings with a trio of silver flowers. Many reasonably-priced gift items, too.Written January 4, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- kmhontravelWashington DC, DC50 contributionsThe Lee Country Black History Society and Williams Academy Black History Museum is a wonderful treasure in Fort Myer. Located in a quiet park named for baseball legend Roberto Clemente, with plenty of parking, the society's welcoming staff and three historic buildings with an interactive 1940's segregated southern classroom offer a quiet refuge to learn about the experiences and contributions of local (and national) Afro-Americans in Lee County and Florida.
Here we learned about the women and men who lived and built the community (Civil War, WWII, educators, women entrepreneurs). Appreciated how the museum provided information about local families employed at the Edison Ford Winter Estates (didn't see/hear this covered at the Estates). The geographic distances between the two is only 2.5 miles but the contrast is much greater. Very glad to have toured the Lee County Black History Society first and highly recommend a visit.Written June 22, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are exhibits on a regular basis that are always interesting and thoughtfully presented. The museum is on the college campus and you have to hunt for it. That's ok, as it's a very beautifully landscaped campus. You can visit the reflecting pool, complete with fish, and Thomas Edison statue (used to be Edison College).Written February 12, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
