Traveling to FoCo this weekend with my mother. We’d like to go hiking around Horserooth Mountain maybe Sunday or Monday. We aren’t looking for anything too crazy but would like to check out the scenery and hike for a few hours.
Anyone know of a hiking guide or company in that area who does this?
It might seem silly but we would feel more comfortable hiking with someone who is used to the area. We are coming from below sea level southern US where it’s currently 85 degrees.
We will have regular hiking shoes and cold weather gear, but no bear pepper spray, etc.
Answer: The mountain lion attack at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space was very unusual and very rare. Yes, there has been increased lion activity in the area. Bears are not an issue especially this time of year as they are still in their dens. Colorado has only black bears which are not known to be aggressive so people don't usually carry bear spray - at least not for bears. You do NOT need a guide for Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. The area is essentially a suburban park for Fort Collins and Loveland. On Sunday in particular, there will be other people hiking in the area.
