My wife and I went on a 8 day trip to Jordon run by Voyage Prive in conjuction wih a local tuor operator , do not remember their name , The arrangements by V. P . were fine there was some difficulty with the local operator as they had a set itinerary which did not correspond with that given to us by V. P. so we had to pay an extra £120 to visit on Jerash which was one of the places we particularly wished to visit. On the whole the trip was good and the local operator was fine with that one exception. When we returned to the uk we obtained a refund of the additional cost , slightly inconvenient but not worth raising a row with the local operator and causing a scene on our holiday as we were certain to obtain a refund from V. P.

Goodness me, it was well worth getting up very early in the morning to get to Little Petra to then walk up and over the mountain to get to the Monastery.

Leaving the tomb of Uneishu and the rest of the Petra archaeological city behind us we continued on our visit through the Outer Siq to the magnificent Al-Khazneh; which is probably the most photographed of all the buildings/ruins/tombs in Petra. Carved out of the sandstone in the first century AD, it is thought that Al-Khazneh was the tomb of the Nabataean King Aretas III and,as ornate as it is on the exterior, like all the other monuments carved out of the rock n Petra, the interior is exactly the opposite and is very plain and unadorned. Although it is a tomb, it is also known as "The Treasury" becvause a legend grew up that the urn on the facade contained the treasure of an Egyptian pharaoh who hid it in there while he was chasing Moses and the Israelites.

This sloping, level pathway of just over a mile in length is the real entrance to the Petra ruins as known all over the world. Like us, I am sure that you will be amazed as you walk through the pathway hewn through towering rock faces. Apart from looking up, keep looking around because you will see the channels along which the water supply for Petra flowed as well as carvings in the rock faces like the Santos Alwxander Station and the Camel Caravan Reliefs.

The Theater is carved into the mountain at the foot of the High Place of Sacrifice. The Theatre was rebuilt by the Romans. It is the only theatre in the world that is built into the living rock The High Place of Sacrifice is place of worship on the mountain plateau. You can climb to the rock and be rewarded to an expansive view of the ancient city of Petra below. The High Place of Sacrifice was used for significant religious ceremonies.
