We drove in from NE Texas and took the Talimena Scenic Byway-Highway 1 from OK into AR to head to the top of the Queen Wilhelmina State Park by the Lodge. First if you are coming from OK, this route has about 5 scenic vistas to pull over and see out and we did most of them. At the end of the route you reach the state park and lodge. We brought a picnic lunch and out looking out over the mountain. The views are spectacular. There is a restaurant and lodge to stay at on the top and clean restrooms inside the building as well as a visitor's area to ask questions. We did the Lover's Leap hiking trail, one mile but steep and over boulders in some places and the trail is covered in small rocks. It was in the 80s but we still sweated and there are a lot of flies and bees so bring spray. Great overlook half-way. Bring water and a walking stick. Took about an hour. At the bottom of the state park walk around the Wonder House. Unique piece of architecture. While we were looking inside the windows our daughter saw a large black snake slithering under the gutters so beware what's above your head. We took the AR route up 71 to get to Fort Smith from here and I wouldn't recommend it. It was super slow and not much to see. Take the route back into OK to head to Ft. Smith as I understand it's faster.

We had such a great time! Debbie was very knowledgeable and helpful. Be sure to take buckets or boxes to take your finds home, you won't want to stop digging!

We were there in late January, 2022. Stopped by to get some information on the Talimena Scenic Byway and see the local history museum. The Chamber of Commerce employee let us in the museum (ADA renovations were being made) and chatted with us about the local sites and history, and about the trains. As we were talking, a train came ROARING by! Wow! My husband loved it so much.

Secluded, clean with plenty of creek crossing and nothing way too dangerous. At one time I had a map with special interest places to find when riding. We never found those places but I would imagine they are there. Plenty of parking at the trail heads, unfortunately no vaulted toilet or any type of restrooms/showers. There is an information board with maps.

I guess no dogs allowed because people do not take care of their animal waste??? Disappointing! But other than that, the park is beautiful . Ducks, water fountain, stained glass window gazebo I could see from my B&B across the street. Well lit!

I remember this place from my childhood when we could climb the tower . We visited this past year but couldn’t climb . I have spoken to a Ranger who stated only a few people (6-8) can be on the tower at a time because of its age and without someone standing at the gate counting people they cannot allow open access . But the grounds still have old structures and is a beautiful stop .

Great place for smaller kids or people who are looking for the less extreme zip lines. Friendly and very attentive staff.

Kevin the owner of Hawks Overlook ATV Rentals is a very knowledgeable guy about all the trails in the Wolf Pen Gap area! My wife and I rented a 900cc Polaris side-by-side and it ran flawlessly and climbed all the hills and valleys we pointed it to! The area is scenic especially when Kevin tells you where to go to see the most sights, overlooks, streams, and where to picnic or even to go swimming! Neat!!

We brought a lunch with us and had a wonderful picnic right alongside of a quiet stream in the peaceful Ouachita National Forest, which has 1.8 million acres!

For a great se;f-guided adventure see Kevin at Hawks Overlook ATV Rentals!

This was our 2nd trip here. First time we stayed in one of the cabins but this time we took 2 other couples so we rented the guest house. It was very nice and well kept. 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with everything included such as linens and silverware. There was even a charcoal grill on the covered back porch. The owner was super nice and very helpful. Her trails are easy going and lead right to the river where we like to sit and visit after riding.

Wasn’t planning on stopping in town but on the way a friend told me about The Mercantile.
We decided to stop and WOW! Bought some vintage Pyrex bowls, great smelling soap as gifts for friends and family, and some neat toys and trinkets for my nieces and nephews. There is truly something for everyone!
The lady that owns the place was very friendly and knows all about the town and lead us to some other great places to visit. We pass through Mena pretty often but never stop. We will most definitely visit The Mercantile and Mena again.
