On of the popular water activities on Mafia is to go snorkeling at Chole. It took our boat about 20 minutes to get out there. One nice thing about this spot is that it has something for everyone. if you prefer to stay shallow its there. If you prefer to go deeper you can do that as well. The water was warm and very clear. We spent about 90 minutes snorkeling before everyone was ready to head back in. Lots to see and do.

Getting here is difficult, there is no denying that. But the views once one gets here is well worth the danger and hassel.

To everyone visiting Tanzania, I would recommend both Mafia Island and Mafia Island diving! We visited at the start of August and had an amazing time. For me it was the first time diving, I got my open water SSI with Mafia Island diving. My partner has dived before. We were both very impressed with the quality of diving and the great care the staff and owners of Mafia Island Diving put into ensuring a safe and impressive dive.

Dickson was my diving instructor. He has 20 years of experience and it shows! He was a great teacher, thank you!
Haji was our diving guide for the rest of the trips. He has an eagle eye for the smallest, most beautiful things. We had a great time with him.

Over all, the staff and the owner, Dani, we super nice, helpful and professional. After diving we were able to hang out at the diving school, and they also offered sunbeds on the beach if you weren’t diving. We would love to come back!

Planning my trip to Tanzania, I went through a lot of sources and considered diving on Pemba Island (with wider transport connections) or first-class diving on Mafia Island (with less developed connections). Fortunately, I came across a blog article mentioning someone Afro Whale Shark Safari as a Go-To person when it goes to a trip and activities organization on Mafia Island.
At 11 pm, I went to their website, and sent my request to the chatbot, not expecting to receive an instant response. To my surprise, I got an immediate reply, and after a series of clarifying questions, I got an appealing offer. The offer included plane tickets, transfers, half board accommodation, and a diving package, for very reasonable money. After payment, the next day I was sent a booking confirmation, plane tickets, and a dive schedule. Everyone, including the taxi driver, the hotel staff, and the dive center was at the highest level.
When I got bored, I asked Afro about the excursions they offer on the island. I chose a safari with whale sharks. It was an incredible experience. As one Swiss acquaint said, "You should not just consider this safari, but you must do it". By the way, he himself visited 2 such safaris during his 4-day stay there. He told that he had thrown away a lot of money in other countries, unsuccessfully trying to dive with these sharks. In the Mafia, a meeting with them is almost guaranteed, and Afro staff know perfectly well where and how to find them, by the way, very close to the shore.
It was really an unforgettable experience to snorkel over this huge and beautiful fish. An unforgettable experience, as well as the trip to this wonderful island and the people living there. I warmly recommend this place to visit.

We absolutely loved Big Blu - our favourite place during our 3 weeks Tansania holidays!!

Great diving school, for us one of the best places for diving so far (so many different fish & coralls, different kinds of dive spots etc.), diving instructor/guides very competent and nice

One of the most amazing things there was also the food! Absolutely best food during our 3 weeks Tansania holidays! Every morning you can choose from the menu for lunch and dinner and then it gets freshly prepared for you - high quality, varied & SO tasty!! If you are doing trips they prepare lunch to take away. Every day we got fresh coconuts!

In general atmosphere was relaxed and staff was extremely competent, super nice & authentic, and helpful - from the diving school, the restaurant, the hotel manager, etc. Every wish was fulfilled right away!

Big Blu offers many exciting activities (of course great diving, but also turtle hatching, whale shark watching, snorkling & sandbank trip etc). Since it‘s a small and calm island it‘s also perfect for a relaxing beach day (dream beach at the Butiama hotel at the other side of the island, the hotel manager organised a tuktuk for us which was cheaper than taxi & worked very well)!

The package offer (nights + dives + transport) is fair and good value for price. Rooms are nice and clean. Only the bathroom is a bit old and could look a bit nicer.

The passion and commitment of Anne and Jean is evident in all the little details and choices they’ve made in their serene little camp at the edge of the mangrove. It is beautifully shaded with indigenous trees and shrubs and the houses on stilts are comfortable and set amidst the natural surroundings. This is truly as “eco” as it gets. Their passion regarding the environment, the community and ethical tourism deserves plaudits by the multitude.
Kitu Kiblu is the ONLY operator which one can safely say is ethical and responsible in the way they conduct the whaleshark encounters.
It begins with a briefing the evening before, a short briefing in the morning followed by kitting for the snorkels and paraphernalia and a brief explanation regarding whaleshark ecology whilst on the boat.
The captains are taught to respect the sharks in the way they are approached and encountered.
We have seen most other boats landing ON the sharks and asking the clients to jump onto the shark. Not only is this harassment, it also causes disruptions to whaleshark feeding and other normal behaviours.
We recommend booking only kitu kiblu because they are the only ethical operator who genuinely care about the sharks beyond economic incentives.
Hopefully, the marine park will regulate the way in which other encounters are conducted.

Do note that you can stay anywhere on Mafia and still partake in the whaleshark trips with their company.

Many thanks Anne, Jean and all the interns who made our stay enjoyable and a day out at sea that was memorable for our entire group.

Keep up the efforts and Bon courage!

The tour was awesome! We went to the blue lagoon, Chole Island, sandbank for bbq and the local guide took us to his favourite snorkeling spot. It was the best snorkeling I've done in my life!

I had the pleasure of snorkelling with George and his team whilst staying at the lodge. I was not disappointed. There was plenty of Whale Sharks, I was picked up straight from the lodge. The whole experience was mind blowing

I would like to start this off by saying that we had an amazing half day trip with Ussi, he is very happy and friendly, and has perfect English. We went searching for whale sharks (keep in mind this was right at the end of the season and we understood it was unlikely to see anything), and despite not coming across whale sharks, Ussi still took us to an amazing snorkeling place and a guide showed us a bunch of cool fish, I was actually surprised at the beauty of the fish having done the Barrier Reef. Without doubt we had an excellent time, and we left feeling excited, not disappointed in not seeing the famous whale sharks. He even arranged transport for us back to our hotel for free. We ran into him later that night and asked where a good place to eat was, he took us out for some local cuisine with a big smile on his face, always happy to help with anything you need! A top guy!!
Next time we'll come back in peak whale shark season and I have zero doubt in my mind Ussi will connect us with that beautiful creature.

    Amazing experience.
Whale Sharks Tours and Mafia Island Safari in Tanzania are true professionals.
We sailed in a comfortable boat looking for whale sharks. We found two whale sharks in the bay of Kilindoni after a few minutes. We jumped in water and managed to snorkelling with them for one hour.
One of the most beautiful experience ever!
