Dettifoss Waterfall
#1 of 14 Nature & Parks in Lake Myvatn
Amazing to see the most powerfull waterfall stunning scenery, moderate walk to reach from car park, visited east side to get best view
From the free car park there is a fascinating walk through basalt rock formations, similar to walking through a wide canyon and then you arrive at the thundering falls.

You could walk as close to them as possible and they were so natural and authentic, different from a lot of parks that were guarded and had to watch from far away and the place was very wide open, you were free to...
A short ways east of Lake Myvatn and the nature baths you cannot miss this area of active steam vents and mud pools, visible from Highway 1.

Krafla Lava Fields
#3 of 14 Nature & Parks in Lake Myvatn
It is humbling to see what is left behind after nature has taken over for a while, and how life will reappear little by little, making these amazing places to visit.
Park your car and walk past pools of bubbling mud and piles of stones from which clouds of steam hiss.

The colors of black, gray, golden and white amaze me a lot and these wonderful colors show the mysterious and wonderful face of the nature.
Driving from de East Fjords on Route 1, just before arriving to Lake Myvtan, you will see the bubbling mud pots, steam vents and fumaroles of Hverir Park.

My favorite part was the large lake, curious in nature, with its floating pumice stones, steaming primodial ponds and complete lack of vegetation, save some glowing green algae.
Drive from Myvatn Route 1 -> F905 -> F910, then about 40 minutes walk from Vikraborgir Car Park to Viti lake.

Lake Myvatn
#6 of 14 Nature & Parks in Lake Myvatn
You can park there and stay a few days exploring the number of massive waterfalls, geothermal areas like Hverir, hikes etc. and spend an afternoon at the Myvatn Nature Baths.
Great lake surrounded by volcanos and pseudo-volcanos, again an amazing and super different landscape proving the very differentiated nature Iceland has got to offer!

Myvatn Nature Baths (Jardbodin vid Myvatn)
#7 of 14 Nature & Parks in Lake Myvatn
Loved the Myvatn Nature Baths - we had a gorgeous day here after hiring a car in Akureyri and making our way here through the gorgeous scenery and quiet roads (just beware of gravel roads!!!!!!).
Fantastic place where you can enjoy the beauty of the Icelandic countryside and relax in its magnificent nature baths n the North of the country.

There is a fairly steep climb from the car park up to the rim of the volcano but once you are the views are excellent and it’s a fairly easy walk around the rim.
Hike up to the top edge from the car park and if you keen walk the rim as well.

Dimmuborgir Lava Formations
#9 of 14 Nature & Parks in Lake Myvatn
Amazing lava formations and wildlife, but the best thing about this park is the story of the Yule Lads.
You could imagine how powerful the explosion was! We saw some tourists climbing up the lava but there was a sign said don’t and protect the nature.

The guide also gave some great local tips of other things to do, like visiting the bird museum and the nature baths.
Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in Iceland's immensly beautiful nature!

#11 of 14 Nature & Parks in Lake Myvatn
On the way back to the hotel from the Myvatn Nature Baths we stopped at a place called Grótagjá Cave - this is a natural cave that has a hot pool twenty foot inside down rough rocks - used to be used by locals in...
The cave is 2km away from ring street, close to the Myvatn Nature Baths.

Take your time to stroll through the lava and go to the highest point on the mountain to get a good impression of the stunning force of nature.
Though it is quite a walk from the car park (2+km), the scenery here is quite extraordinary!
