- Riplee04Madison, WI67 contributionsSUCH a cool experience. This lake has many (rocky) trails to explore and wonderful scenery and birds to see. Fun watching the ducks & geese in and out of the water. I'm not a skilled hiker, but we walked the many, well marked trails for about 2 hours, stopping to rest and take in the nice breeze. A must-do if you're in the area!Written April 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Gary POrange County, CA23 contributionsThis is one of the most interesting and enjoyable museums we have visited. It covers about four acres and has several buildings including the original governor's mansion. There is a docent in each building who are friendly and knowledgable. They provide an in-depth history of both Arizona and the Prescott area. Your ticket also allows tyou to visit for a second day. Unfortunately we were leaving Prescott the following day or else we would have gone back.Written September 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Explorer043Columbia, MD34 contributionsReally cool tour of downtown Prescott. Lots of history in AZ's first territorial capital. Tour guide was super knowledgeable. Presented history in a fun way. Lots of interesting stories.Written March 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- kcoltonOrange, CA469 contributionsWas here for only a day but managed to visit about 7 different restaurants and bars, also stopped by the whiskey row Harley Davidson shop.
Ended up back at 1 of the bars that had karaoke, which I think a few have. There was also a SpeakEasy hidden in the area of whiskey row. We also went to an Italian restaurant. Also a Irish bar and tex mex for lunch. So much funWritten March 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Courtney MOceanside, CA166 contributionsVery unique grouping of animals. We loved seeing the mountain lion, lynx and the bobcats! The playground and water area were also a great feature for the kids tooWritten July 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GastroEclecticoPhoenix, AZ1,079 contributionsWe were passing the Museum of Indigenous People by while on a recent visit to Prescott and seeing this out of the corner of our eye, decided to stop, and we were glad we did. And boy, were we excited having discovered it. The museum and its property are very nondescript, and that is a shame. It seems to be an underrated museum which should get more exposure and traffic than it apparently does. As their mission states: “To instill understanding and respect for the indigenous cultures of the southwest.” And they do it extremely well. Within the unique stone building and confines of the relatively moderate size museum space are an incredible array of objects, relics, Nik-Naks, gifts, paraphernalia, and artifacts to peruse and learn the while away. Kudos to the staff and volunteers that do an excellent job of teaching those who stop in about this incredible culture.Written July 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim W.Atlanta, GA1,312 contributionsWe arrived here before 11 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The trailhead is located about 2 - 3 miles from Prescott, just off a main highway. There is a sizeable parking lot which charges $3 per day. There is also a bike repair station and restrooms at the trailhead.
We walked for about an hour. You first head downhill to the lake level and spend the first 1/3 mile or so getting to the lake. You then hike along the lake until a spur trail offers the opportunity to hug the shoreline and scramble over some rocks. It wasn't too challenging, but it was also not a completely level trail.
The scenery is nice - the lake, odd boulder formations, occasional wildlife (including a bald eagle!), some ranchers fixing a fence just off one trail, and a fair number of bikers (both manual and electric) on the main trail.
This was a worthwhile stop and we all enjoyed our hike here.Written March 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alan RPhoenix, Arizona9 contributionsSeptember 2024 is my most recent visit to the Phippen, but I have been going there for at least six years. Just want to give credit where credit is due because the Phippen is such a gem of a Western Art and History museum.
Since I am a bit of an Old West Historian and I do love the Prescott area, the Phippen was a must-see for me and I instantly fell in love with the museum. It is small compared to other Western Museums like the Autry in L.A. and the Western Spirit in Scottsdale, but it is mighty. Three exhibit rooms, the main one includes their most recent collection and a rodeo room featuring items and photographs from famed movie cowboy Tom Mix and rodeo champ-John Wayne sidekick Ben Johnson, plus an art room featuring studios of the Phippen namesake George Phippen, who was a founder of the Cowboy Artists of America and Solon Borglum, who sculpted the famed Buckey O'Neill statue that is in front of the court house in downtown Prescott.
Downstairs there's another gallery and a room where members and students can make their own art. Lectures are usually presented there.
And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Phippen Store that features Western History books, Native American Jewelry, sculptures and prints, cards and yes, a rarity these days - Western theme wrapping paper.
If you are enthralled by the spirit of the West, if you love old and contemporary Western Art and Sculpture, and if you plan to visit Prescott, the Phippen, just located 7 miles north of the downtown area on Highway 89 is a must-see.Written September 27, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They were evicting campers & hikers, and cancelling future camping reservations. Be sure to check before you go.
However, after a long morning hike we could see why -- the ground is cracked and dry, the forest is brown. Prescott desperately needs rain.
Once it reopens, its worth a visit if you like to hike. Lots of trails and unless you insist on doing one of the super popular ones, you won't see many people.
NOTE: There is a $5 day pass fee collected in the parking lots. Be prepared with correct change and a pencil to write with; you must leave your receipt on your dashboard.Written July 2, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Left hand side of trail is paved to the top but is steeper than the non paved path to the right. Side trail near the top is worth it for the fantastic view of Prescott and the surrounding area.Written May 30, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
