What travelers are saying
- Adrian BPuerto de Mazarron, Spain104 contributionsMy wife and I visited the medieval walls of Avilla during a recent visit. The walls are, we were told, the most complete such constructions left in the world, and they are indeed hugely impressive. However, walking along them can be rather expensive (8 Euros each if memory serves me correctly). It's also somewhat difficult to find suitable points to gain access to the walls! The old town enclosed by the walls is certainly steeped in history, rather reminiscent of the silent city of Mdina in Malta, and, on the day we visited (somewhat drizzly) the town was reasonably quiet and devoid of traffic. It's a splendid way to spend 3 or 4 hours - or more - provided you enjoy history! Outside the walls the 'new' town of Avila is rather different, and somewhat devoid of historical interest.Written November 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia20,004 contributionsMake this place your first stop before entering the medieval jewel of Avila. There's a free parking lot right in front.
Los Cuatro Postes refers to a small medieval shrine built over an ancient Roman Temple. Today, only the four Doric columns remain, but the main attraction here are fab, unobstructed views of Avila walls.
Beside, is the Avila letter sign - fantastic photo op.Written August 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's built on a place where Vicente along with two another martyrs were executed in 4th c.
However, being outside the city walls it's overlooked by the famous Avila Cathedral.Written August 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Romanesque prevails outside, while Gothic interiors are prevailing, so it's considered first Gothic Cathedral in Spain dating back to 12 century.
Second, it's apse is incorporated in Avila's Walls (most famous thing about this town) and make one of 87 turrets.

It was a nice church but not terribly notable in our opinion, and we didn’t stay long (partly because Mass was about to begin). But if in Avila, you should go. - Kyle & CarrieRochester, NY32 contributionsAbsolutely gorgeous! So peaceful. The church inside is insanely intricate and definitely worth seeing. It has a replica of the altar piece in the Royal Chapel. Paintings covering the walls. Definitely worth a stop. Inexpensive experience for wonderful results.Written April 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- CaliforniaCalifornia6 contributionsA must for Catholics or anyone interested in the life of Saint Teresa of Avila. Beautiful view of the city walls from outside. - BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia20,004 contributionsOnly slightly above an hour drive from Madrid is this fairy tale small town.
Main star are the amazingly preserved walls encircling the old town - best of its kind in the world with 87 turrets, around 2,5 km perimeter.
Within them you'll find the oldest Spanish Gothic Cathedral, nice small squares, great bars and restaurants...a very compact and easy to navigate town.Written August 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The square is big with several bars to sit and cool down after visiting the old town.
Unfortunately, the Church was closed so we couldn't visit it.Written August 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. To some extent, the location combines the attractions of both a museum and an art gallery, with intact (and restored) architectural features from the 16th century, along with the sculptures and paintings of the Italian Guido Caprotti, and members of his family. The palace was empty when we visited, so we could take our time looking at all the various exhibits. It's really quite impressive, and certainly worthy of a visit. We hadn't heard of Caprotti, but we'll certainly be finding out more about his life and times now that we've seen his sculptures and paintings. He has an interesting style, with a vivid use of colour, and an emphasis on eyes when depicting the human form, which he certainly seems to think are the gateways to the soul! Well done to everyone who helped bring about this particular cultural offering - it definitely adds to the overall mix in Avila. Emphatically a must-see destination for those new to 'old' Avila!Written November 24, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Denis CHowwood, UK207 contributionsThis was the first of St Teresa’s reformed carmelite converts, simple to the point of austerity. - RazorfishLittle Rock, AR5,281 contributionsPlaza Mayor is a nice city square in medieval Avila. It is not as touristy as Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. There are not many shops or cafes in the plaza.
