having been using it since 2008, I have watched it evolve into a massive metro system that I personally have not experienced better anywhere else. London could well learn a few things on how to run a metro system competently.

With so many reviews here already I will just share a few tips instead.

Line 11 is always packed, it connects Disneyland to the border of Jiangsu. Commuters on this line (including myself) often pack a mini stool in their bag. The end of this metro line connects to Suzhou from Huaqiao station.

The carriages at the rear of the incoming train often have seats available (unless its line 11).

All stations have escalators and elevators in them as well as wider 'luggage' ticket barriers. All bags must be put through a scanner, however if contents of bag is minimal the guard usually will allow you to pass if you open and display the contents. This is a useful tip for beating the rush.

Maximum fare is currently 14 RMB and based on distance not number of stops. Minimum is still only 3 RMB. Machines accept 1 and 0.5 coins. 5, 10, 20, 50 notes as well as payment using Wechat / Alipay. It is possible to buy a travel card within the stations from staff kiosk.

Trains use natural air as airconditioning through vents in the carriage roof. It works OK but in high summer its advisable to bring a personal fan. Also, indoor stations are airconditioned including the platforms. Outdoor platforms often have gigantic wall mounted fans that are effective in the high summer months.

Wifi is available through a metro app. to connect a local phone number is required for pin. Unlike London, wifi works in the areas under the ground and when going through tunnels.

Shanghai metro is extremely safe and clean. Beggers do not board trains and people are aware that eating or drinking on them is not permitted.

Announcements on trains are written and voiced in Chinese then English. Most of the route maps are in readable pinyin. The next train screens are in Chinese characters though. Cleverly the announcement of an incoming train is only announced on the platform side its coming to.

A useful metro map is available if search for 'explore shanghai'. Stations tend not to have maps diaplayed until through the ticket barriers (although obviously the machines have line route maps). When exiting, usually exits 1 or 2 are the most logical in terms of location. Peoples Square station has a lot of exits, 20 at least if I recall correctly so its worth knowing what exit goes where.

From what I have encountered down the years using this is that staff generally do not speak much English, therefore its advisable to have an offline translator app installed.

If traveling from the center tothe airports from say Jing'an /Zhongshan Park, getting to Pudong airport takes 1 hour 30 minutes. Honqiao T2 takes 30 minutes. Traveling the whole of line 2 from one airport to the other takes just over 2 hours. Apparently this is the world's longest metro line.

As previously mentioned, it is possible to get to Suzhou via the Shanghai metro. Another route to Jiangsu is using line 17, which stops at Zhujiajiao...an old water town and the last town in Shanghai right on the border.

    Enjoy Shanghai.

Price to the city is ¥50, but for passengers with a flight ticket there is a discount - ¥10. You need to show your boarding pass. You can buy round trip ticket for ¥80, it’s valid for 7 days.

Dongchang road ferryThis is such a cheap and easy way to cross the river and even though you only have windows, the views are really great. Note that there are limited seats and you may need to wait a while for the Ferry to complete its roundabout trip

Nigel, who runs ShanghaiDriver, is excellent - his service is reliable, efficient and fairly priced. My wife and I used his service for 4 transfers during a 4 week stay in China - the cars were smart and comfortable; the drivers were efficient and helpful; and Nigel organised the trips efficiently and without fuss. We now know that his service extends throughout China, Hong Kong and HCM City in Vietnam, so I am sure that we and our friends/family will use his service again.

I really enjoy the cruise... It was worth it. However the waiting dock was not sterile from smokers despite the non smoking signs everywhere. Spend the 1 hour evening here and enjoy Shanghai.

We were first time visitors to Shanghai. Jimmy was so easy to communicate with. He was quick to respond and help. We used MIDI Car Rentals for 2 Airport transfers and had such a smooth experience. Would highly recommend using them especially if everything is new to you!

We have just returned from a cruise on Holland America Westerdam that started with an overnight stay in Shanghai. We travelled to Shanghai 3 days before and stayed in central Shanghai. We expected that the overnight stay on the ship would be a high lite but due to the isolated position of the cruise port it was difficult. Access to central Shanghai from the cruise port can be difficult.
You can take the shuttle bus for US$20.00 return but does not leave until 9.00am and returns at 3.30pm. Not much time to look around. There is a train station some 5kms away that can be access by shuttle bus but only leaves on the half hour and taxi will not take you as they are looking for a fare into Central Shanghai. The best way to access central Shanghai is by taxi at around 120RMD. This will be the cheapest way if there is a group. Most taxi will take 4 adults.
The check in at the port was very good, only took about 15 mins, as there a number of personnel available. The port facilities are also very good but as I have stated it is in a very isolated place.

Tom's unwavering dedication to guest service exemplifies his exceptional work ethic and underscores his qualities as a remarkable human being. His kindness and empathy shine through, making him someone you can wholeheartedly trust with your guests or any service at 200%. I'm grateful fate introduced me to Tom in our time of need for critical arrangements for our national team at the Asian Games on short notice. Every aspect of his service surpassed our highest expectations.

Thank you, Tom - words can't express our gratitude enough!

Travelled a lot on the metro and the light rail in Shanghai, found it easy to buy tickets and it's convenient travel at a very reasonable price. The light rail you get to see a little more of the sights of the city.
I would recommend it as a travel mode.

My family and I recently visited Shanghai for a family vacation and we used Miki for our transportation services for 2 days while you were there. You know that communication in China can be very hard with not having the proper internet and the language barrier but Miki made each day so enjoyable and pleasant for us. She was even able to get us around Shanghai at night safely with two kids. They took a shopping, picked us up and dropped us off everywhere we needed to go and the price was excellent for us. I am recommending the service to all people on here and will definitely use her service again if we travel back to Shanghai and when we go to Bali.

The driver was there 15 minutes early. While he didn't speak much English, he was efficient and timely. Correspondence with the company was easy and clear. Would definitely use them again.

I was thrilled to see the old street, unfortunately there was not much to look at.
Riding around in Rickshaw was ok, only the the driver forcibly asked us for a tip besides the fare. He got angry at our 20Yuan tip and even called some other drivers to come to us.
..and we thought tip was supposedly voluntary...

Many of the cab drivers seemed to get us there quickly but be prepared for an old school experience. If your phone is capable (iPhone) I recommend using Apple Maps and showing the driver your anticipated route. That might have helped my extended trip from the hotel to the airport although I am not sure it was this specific company...
