I was privileged to go into the “chimney” for one of the exhibits. It has modern and contemporary pieces of art that exhibit the culture of Shanghai. There are three floors and pieces on display include paintings, jade, ivory, and wood carvings, needlework pieces and more.
Some of the pieces were so intricate and gorgeous. Obviously a lot of time and love went into making them.
There are some live art creation events that happen, with artists there working. Also a gift shop is available to make some purchases, though things seems rather expensive.
The place isn't overly big, but we did see several pieces that were very impressive. There are world class special exhibitions and a very good, well-curated exhibition on Chinese realist art. The labeling has some English translation but help from a Chinese speaker is useful.

As far as I know, it's the only place where they allow graffiti and this is where you'll find the art galleries. I was very tempted to buy paintings more than a few times while I was there. There's a cafe nearby that had bacon pizza, grab a drink and wonder through the galleries.

Got there by taxi, and walked to the nearest metro station afterwards. There were a total of 6 other people in the queue, all wearing masks. Was sent two confirmation QR code tickets. I needed to have these electronic tickets scanned at the entry desk, and exchanged for electronic entry passes on my phone. Also needed to show valid green Shanghai health codes. Backpacks and water bottles had to go in a set of lockers.
You wander freely around the rooms - every corridor and room is part of the display. The animations and lighting effects are exceptionally good, and many respond directly to your presence - in particular, the butterfly room. In this one, just by standing in the room you create butterflies that spawn directly at your location, swarm across the floor and up onto the walls, then they slowly migrate through all the other rooms and displays.
Signage and information about the displays is available in Chinese and English. Scents are also used in some of the rooms, and backgound music plays through all the displays and rooms.
The Crystal Room (mirrors and multicolour LEDs) is particularly impressive and immersive, although it can be a little disorientating until you get used to it, and you may need to be careful with small children to prevent them walking into the LED strips. The exhibition is very good, not great. A range of Nara from paintings to sculptures
The museum itself is not that large and already underused with some empty spaces. Also weak air conditioning in this summer heat
Buying ticket at the counter was a chore with unhelpful staff who is reluctant to take cash
They have shown Warhol, Giacometti, KAWS etc. so make sure you check the website and news before you go. What an amazing artist! The works are stunning and you almost cannot believe it's real.
This small museum is one of the highlights of our trip to Shanghai.

It's a small place and the exhibit I saw was Transmedia Art - a combination of art forms that you don't typically think of combined together. Some were delightful. One of the most memorable ones was a combination of Claude Debussy's "Fantasy" with traditional Chinese singing and dance. I watched and listened a long time. Another was a digital art piece made by TIAN Xiaolei - some of the imagery was a little disturbing (I could imagine in my science fiction way some of that actually happening) but beautifully rendered and highly provocative. Admission is RMB 50 but worth it. There's a small restaurant for food and beverage at the top. It's located in the People's Park on 321 W. Nanjing Road immediately adjacent to the former location of the Shanghai Art Museum. Go with a friend or a loved one so you can discuss what you see. - Heidi HNew York City, NY155 contributionsMy sister-in-law took me here. I thought, why do you want to take me to a fabric store. Well, it was awesome. I love blue & white things. They have a nice display of how they make the fabrics. But don't expect a guided tour or much more than "you try on?" Still, I loved it. I bought a blouse, two pillow covers, and a tiny key chain rabbit. I wear the shirt all the time and absolutely love the pillow covers on my bed.
