What travelers are saying
- RumplesTucson, AZ11,452 contributionsThis well-maintained camel-back truss bridge spans the Suzhou Creek, where it joins the Huangpu River at the northern end of the Bund promenade. Noted for being China's first all-steel bridge, it opened in 1908. I first saw the bridge when I stopped at the Monument to the People's Heroes on the promenade. I approached the 350-foot-long span and decided to cross on one of the pedestrian walkways. A bridge and groom strolled ahead of me, stopping midway to pose for a photographer.
A cool breeze blew across the bridge, which was much appreciated on the hot, humid October day. Views from here included Pudong skyscrapers and the Bund. Only a few vehicles crossed the creek while I was there..
Garden (also known as Waibaidu) Bridge has appeared in many films, including Seven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun." I think it is worth a look when exploring the Bund.Written October 19, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. While maybe not particularly structurally significant, this bridge like everything else in Shanghai is functional and attractive.
Unique spiral approach makes it all the more interesting.Written November 4, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Joseph vShanghai, China43 contributionsLovely old style house. Worth the 20kuai entry fee. Plenty of English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese explanations. Enter through the house, then go into a large garden with explanations for why the owner had built each piece of the structures, pavilions, etc. lovely quiet garden when I went. Loved the explanations of the buildings, and the attention to detail the owner had put into it. Very picturesque, natural, and a great look into a Chinese old style house.Written January 17, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PipPaul WBuckfastleigh, UK1,626 contributionsA delightful bridge, but at the end of the day that is all it is, a bridge.
Gets very busy during peak travel times, and police use loud hailers to encourage people not to stop, which is silly as everyone wants a picture on or from the bridgeWritten September 28, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand3,471 contributionsInteresting old bridge at the north end of the Bund. Steel-truss bridge is a favorite for photo selfies and wedding pictures. The "rainbow" nickname of the bridge comes from the multi-colored lighting at night. Also known as the "Garden Bridge."Written January 20, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Chris PShanghai, China4,925 contributionsThis bridge is not as impressive as the other bridges across the river and sadly you can no longer climb to the top. Love all the new walking, jogging and cycle lanes that go past this bridgeWritten June 19, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PlatinumForeverDUSShanghai, China2,437 contributionsActually a very beautiful historical bridge - unfortunately, the surroundings are to be improved by local government. Worthwhile to see the bridge but old buildings along the river getting less and less attractive - visit could be combined with other with sightseeing spots in Songjiang.Written February 13, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - youke_worldwideSingapore4,792 contributionsImpressive gigantic bridge. View on both sides so-so though. There is the greyness of Shanghai and the buildings are on either side are not that interesting plus the morning peak hour traffic is no jokeWritten March 24, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
