We took the wet market tour which was fun and interesting. Echo identified a number of interesting fruits and meats. She helped me buy great northern Chinese rice (so many varieties to pick from!). Back at a private residence we made dumplings. By the end we were all making pretty well shaped dumplings that tasted great. Helen and her team made us comfortable and were great instructors. Highly recommended. Thank you Helen and team!

I live in Shanghai and took my family who was visiting on Christmas Day to learn how to make dumplings, spring rolls and ended up tasting and eating six dishes! So go hungry and ready to taste authentic Chinese food. The tour guide was fantastic, professional and spoke English very well. Going to the market was wonderful and eye opening into the culture. The Hostess spoke English as well and was polite and fun. We all loved the hands on experience in a very clean and welcoming home setting! Thank you!

Our instructor was Chef Linda and she was great with us. We made xiao long bao (a steamed soup dumplings filled with pork) and Shanghai-style fried spring rolls. These spring rolls pack a lot of flavor from a small bit of pork, cabbage, bamboo shoots, and shiitake mushrooms. The trick to making anything fired healthier and light is to have your cooking oil on high heat and only fry for 10 seconds until spring roll wrapper turns golden brown. Both were delicious and we ended up with lots of leftovers.

This was one of my best experiences in Shanghai. Patrick, my guide and interpreter, picked me up promptly at my hotel. Our driver took us first to a "wet" market, a local market selling live seafood in tanks (hence the wet), local vegetables and produce, etc. A great way to experience real life in Shanghai. Our chef had already purchased ingredients, so we did not make any purchases. We then drove to the chef's home on the 4th floor of an apartment building. Chef Hong let me choose the menu ahead of time-Kung Pao Chicken, pork wontons and potstickers (dumplings), green beans and an additional dish she chose--Chinese eggplant! Chef had done all the prep work, but the class was hands on as she would cook first, then I would cook the same dish after her. And of course, we feasted when all was done! What a great way to experience Shanghai cuisine and culture. Highly recommend! I hired Patrick to tour Water Town as well.
