A fantastic place and not hard to get to. I took an Auto from Borivali station which cost 23 rupees. I spent more than two hours exploring the caves (there are more than 100, some are magnificent, while some are small and plain). Not many food or beverage options inside, so take some supplies. Now here is some useful information. First you pay the entrance fee for Sanjay Ghandi National Park (85 rupees for foreigners, ignore the camera charge). The rickety bus to the caves costs 10 rupees (my return journey was in a share taxi at 50 rupees). The caves come under ASI so there is another entrance charge: 300 rupees. But so well worth while!

Buddhist Monastery to be found in Andheri District of Mumbai.
The site consists of 19 caves carved out of the solid rock over 2 separate periods.
I got there via a taxi from South Mumbai & the caves are not too far from the Western Express Highway but we encountered some pretty hideous congestion after leaving the Highway.
It was easy enough to park right outside the cave site which is fenced off. Plenty of shops for refreshment.
Payment is cashless which may present a problem for foreign travellers such as myself.
All I will say is that an alternative is possible.
Once inside , the site is clean & well maintained.
Being fairly high up , there is the possibility of a view , barring smog/ heat haze.
Probably more interesting for Buddhist & scholars. For run of the mill tourists such as myself not really worth more than a 30 minutes look

Jogeshwari caves are ancient buddhist stuctures carved around 1500 years ago. They are located in middle of slum dwellings with entrance from busy street. Most of the intererior has been destroyed. The rest has been encroached with several recent shrines. When I visited several religious rituals including what appeared to be a wedding and a puja were underway. Still worth spending 30 mins if you are in the vicinity.

Had been to these ancient rock-cut caves a long back ago. These caves were built in the 8th century and is under ASI.

These caves consist of 3 caves. The first 2 caves are the main ones. The 3rd cave is known as the Cathedral cave attached to the main cave. The interior of the caves consists of sculptures. Near the entrance of the cave is a cross carved by the Portuguese when they converted these caves into a chapel.

Now, these caves are under police protection and are used as a religious place of worship. They have been sadly neglected over the years. Photography is not allowed inside the caves. There is no entry fee as such. One can see slum children playing cricket within the cave premises. Also, one can see a buried well as well as a buried Portuguese cross stand being neglected by the ASI. Above the caves, there are ruins of a Portuguese Chapel and a Monastery. Sadly, there are no tourists visiting the caves as they are not maintained.

Due to negligence, I would not recommend these caves for families, but recommend it for history lovers who are facinated about ancient Indian architecture.
