I'd heard all sorts of horror stories about New Delhi train station and was expecting to either be crushed in the crowds or scammed at every turn. The truth is neither happened. The station is obviously busy and everything that comes with that but, despite being a very obvious foreign tourists complete with giant backpacks, we weren't hassled at all beyond a few people asking if we needed a taxi. Maybe we just got lucky but I didn't see anything dodgy going on. There was a massive queue to get through security at the main entrance in the middle of the station but there are smaller entrance halls at the left and right of the building which we walked straight through so it's worth checking these if you want to skip the lines. The only thing is these smaller entrance halls don't have the boards telling you the departure platforms so you may need to check in the main entrance hall first. Once you know your platform, everything is clearly signposted in English and Hindi so it's pretty easy to find where you need to go. It certainly isn't the cleanest or most modern train station in the world but you're only passing through so I don't think it matters that much. One thing I would say though is don't wear sandals or flip flops. I was slipping and sliding in puddles of who knows what so I was glad to be wearing trainers!

Rather than driving to Agra from Delhi, we took the Gatimaan Express train from Nizamuddin station (took 1hr 40mins). What an experience. The station was heaving but seeing the track worker toiling away was an eye opener.

The train carriage we booked was air conditioned allegedly and was basic to say the least. I didn’t know at the time, but apparently we had opted for the onboard catering. To be honest, we all swerved the refreshments. Irrespective, it was a better way to travel to Agra.

Rather than drive from Delhi to Agra we took the train. It took 1hr 40mins.

The carriage we booked was allegedly air conditioned and catering was provided. The carriage was basic and heaving.

To be honest the parcelled food and drink provided looked ok but we didn’t want to take the risk so we opted for our own crisps and bottled water.

Irrespective, I wouldn’t have missed the experience.

I don’t know how many in Delhi are aware of the existence or of the whereabouts of this railway station, yes it is in Delhi but it is very unlike other Delhi stations. In addition to EMUs there are just a few trains that stop at this station but as these trains do not stop at any other station in Delhi it is important to know the limitations of this station. This is a small station and except for mandatory toilet/water /shade etc there are no other facilities for passengers. No shop for food or water, no cloakroom or waiting room etc, the only food available at this station is outside the station building and that is CHANA-MURMURA only. Getting an auto rickshaw may be a difficult task at odd hours.

Travelling between New Delhi and Kalka on 4th January 2023 Train 12011 in C3/23.There are rodents of 6 inches size running under the seats. This speaks volumes about the hygeine standards especially when Indian Citizens and Expats are on board. Toilets are dirty immediate action needs to be taken by the Cleaning agency and onboard staff. The biggest fear is about their bite to any passenger on board.

We are train travel fans. & Shatabdi is one of the two most comfortable trains in India. We took the Habibganj Shatabdi from New Delhi to Bhopal. We travelled in the Executive Class which was extremely comfortable.

We were looked after well & served breakfast & lunch. The train was, unfortunately, late but that was due to flooding in a few parts that we crossed. Railways does have a big task at hand to ensure the train is kept clean at all times.

We would love to travel again by the Shatabdi Express.
