The manager told us that they pay fishermen if they find any wounded/in-distress turtle and also if they bring eggs.
All the eggs received are placed under sand with a tentative date of birth. We were told that the probability of birth goes from 5% to 80% under their care as the eggs are shielded from nature and predators.
They have three/four types of turtles that they care for, and ultimately release into the sea. They also have several wounded turtles, some that will stay with them forever either because of permanent injury/disability or being endangered (there's a albino turtle).
Overall, they are doing a terrific job at conserving turtles and it makes for a very enriching visit.Written November 24, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Yes most of the coral is broken or smashed due to the past tsunami 🌊 but it is on the mend and fresh coral is starting to bloom and grow.
What is most surprising is the large variety of fish. We seen even seen a puffer fish 🐡 or two. Loads of angel fish, moray eels, sea cucumbers, an octopus 🐙 and even two very large brightly colored parrot fish.
It’s not the Great Barrier Reef but then it’s never going to be that.Written January 8, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can smash coconuts chilli and garlic and have someone to chant your revenge against someone that has done you wrong. What i found more fascinating is that this small chapel was unaffected by the tsunami.Written June 3, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Seevali DColombo, Sri Lanka8,594 contributions300 metres walk along the beach from my hotel "Coral Sands" took me to the Hikkaduwa Fishing Harbour complex. The entrance fee for foreigners is Rs 100.
I was there early morning on 26th December 2019 to see the incoming fishing boats and wholesale bulk fish sales. It was interesting to see the fisherfolk carry out their chores. I had a glimpse into part of their life.
It was smelly with so much of fish lying around and on sale. It was noisy too. I spoke to several fishermen who very friendly. They permitted me to photograph their fish and themselves. It was an interesting half-hour that I spent within the harbour market area.
The harbour is manmade and is enclosed within two large rock-filled embankments. There were many colourful boats some large, some small. I was told that the larger boats do their fishing farther away while the smaller ones fish close to the land.
I walked along the Left side embankment taking a few photographs as I went along. There is a beacon atop a post about 20 metres tall to guide the night-time fishermen at sea.
Interesting and informative hour spent before retracing my path back to the hotel.Written January 13, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Selena BBrookline, MA7 contributionsAmazing massage from Dean, and beautiful shellac manicure and pedicure. I've visited the salon twice, the second time I drove 60 min for the best massage. I've tried different salons in Sri Lanka, this was my favourite. The shellac is done with so much attention for detail. The staff is friendly, they offered me drinks and food.Written April 29, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
