What travelers are saying
- BrigTravelsSydney, Australia87 contributionsA must visit local museum when visiting Hikkaduwa. While an unsurprisingly emotional visit, the in-house guide was incredibly articulate and imparted facts and her own personal experience with passion and extreme generosity of spirit. We had already fallen in love with the Sri Lankan people and to understand the suffering and turmoil their country has endured over so many years was a privilege. Don’t shy away from seeing and hearing about their trauma - it is a small price to pay for experiencing this beautiful country.Written January 15, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jennie GChristchurch, New Zealand195 contributionsIt is so good to see that this place is doing their part in rescuing turtles. Sad to see some of the turtles are without body parts and that they can not be released, but they have a place in the sanctuary for life. They also have a hatchery where the turtles are released at 5 days old.Written January 12, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Steven SPattaya, Thailand782 contributionsAfter visiting the nearby Tsunami Museum which has many photos showing the devastation caused by the tsunami I came here.
The buddha statue complex was created in rememberance of those who lost their lives to this natural catastrophe. The buddha statue is very beautiful. It stands 18.5m high which was the height of the main wave that came through the area.
The buddha itself is an exact replica (height aside) of the 175 feet high buddha in Afganistan that was sadly destroyed by the Taliban.
I read 6 different websites and only one gave the correct height of the buddha. You wonder if people writing travel blogs have even been here or just copy text from other blogs.
Anyway, I felt it was well worth seeing.Written March 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Gymmey K5 contributionsNot much to say other than this beach is just beautiful and not too busy !

- StephenDublin, Ireland198 contributionsHaving seen so many bad reviews about this I wasn’t expecting much but was gladly surprised.
Yes most of the coral is broken or smashed due to the past tsunami 🌊 but it is on the mend and fresh coral is starting to bloom and grow.
What is most surprising is the large variety of fish. We seen even seen a puffer fish 🐡 or two. Loads of angel fish, moray eels, sea cucumbers, an octopus 🐙 and even two very large brightly colored parrot fish.

The main vihara has the reclining Buddha in it and there are severa smaller temples surrounding it. Very quite and serene.Written October 2, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Seevali DColombo, Sri Lanka8,947 contributions300 metres walk along the beach from my hotel "Coral Sands" took me to the Hikkaduwa Fishing Harbour complex. The entrance fee for foreigners is Rs 100.
I was there early morning on 26th December 2019 to see the incoming fishing boats and wholesale bulk fish sales. It was interesting to see the fisherfolk carry out their chores. I had a glimpse into part of their life.
It was smelly with so much of fish lying around and on sale. It was noisy too. I spoke to several fishermen who very friendly. They permitted me to photograph their fish and themselves. It was an interesting half-hour that I spent within the harbour market area.
The harbour is manmade and is enclosed within two large rock-filled embankments. There were many colourful boats some large, some small. I was told that the larger boats do their fishing farther away while the smaller ones fish close to the land.
I walked along the Left side embankment taking a few photographs as I went along. There is a beacon atop a post about 20 metres tall to guide the night-time fishermen at sea.
Interesting and informative hour spent before retracing my path back to the hotel.Written January 13, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
