Very difficult climb in the heat. Humid and hot. All shaded climbing, but very humid of course. One lovely local farm lady who was 65 made the climb with our family, fanning us at times, and giviing us correct estimations on timelines up the hill. She offered cold drinks at the top of the hill for reasonable prices. After a solid hike we were happy to support her efforts and camaraderie. Fantastic views at the top...just behind the moon. Worth it...but be prepared for the hike. My 6 year old loved it...saw it as a challenge. You can do it!

The Silver Cave is the largest karst cave in Guilin. The cave requires a bit of imagination to enjoy the experience. Before you enter the cave, you will be given an audio electronic recorder and earpiece that will alert you of each landmark when you enter the cave. There are both English and Chinese audio electronic guides. These recorder will be collected at the end of the trail. You will need to pay a fine if you lose it so do take care of it. Once you enter the cave, you will walk past various checkpoints. There is only 1 route so you will not get lost. The whole route is around 1 hour to 1.5 hours depending on your pace and times you stop to take photo. You can factor around 2 hours including the shopping time outside the cave. Each checkpoint will ask you to look up, left or right at a formation. You need a bit of imagination, as the recorder will claim that the structure is the shape of a religious monument, mythical being or an animal. To enjoy the experience, you need to forget you are an adult and visualise it like how a kid will to enjoy the experience. Otherwise you will be bored quickly. Along the way, there are photographers who will take free shots of you that will then be charged if you like to buy the photos later. At the end of the trail, you will also visit a row of shops selling Buddhist symbols, herbs or local Guilin products. There will also be salesmen trying to convince you to buy photos with frames that they will charge a premium for. It is a highly commercial experience but entertaining if you imagine the structures like how a kid will.

One more note is that you need to take good care of your health during winter. I went there in December at 9 degrees in the morning. It is cold outside during winter but warm in the cave. If you take off your jacket during the visit, do put in on before you leave the cave. This is to avoid catching a cold while you loosely dressed and sweating in the cave.

We enjoyed wandering through the brightly light Gold Water cave where there are lots of stalactites and stalagmites often looking like the descriptions of “ crocodile teeth” “forest” “curtains” or “dragons chair” . The highlight however was going into the cold mud bath which was surprisingly thick in places and then (after a long cold shower) the hot springs bath. Fun experience and although there are lots of Chinese tourists going through the caves very few ventured into the baths when we were there.

Together with local guide we visited the caves. Even though it is the golden week the place was not to crowded. Bring your bathing suit to have a nice mud bath and relax in the hot spring after!
