What travelers are saying
- 534virginiatCape Town, South Africa95 contributionsThe first week we stayed at the Penthouse Botafogo. This apartment was central to all the attractions. I communicated with the owner, Walter via WhatsApp . There is a washing machine in the apartment so u could wash your clothes if necessary.
We could see the Christ the Redeemer statue from all the rooms as well as the Sugarloaf mountain . The beach was within walking distance, but not suitable for swimming. People are very fitness conscious so there were always activities on the beach as well as on the beachside of the road. We felt safe walking along the beach road. The apartment was close to the supermarket which was just at the bottom of the apartment. The Botafogo shopping mall was also within walking distance. We went to the hairdresser in the mall and they did a very good job.. Also quite close to the metro station if u wanted to take the train. The train system was very easy you just buy a card which u need to load to take a trip on the train. You just follow the color lines for where you want to go. Hundreds of people make use of the train on a daily basis.
The apartment had 3 bedrooms. The two were for couples and the one was a single bedroom but it had an extra bed that could be used if you were more people. Each bedroom was en-suite with a shower and toilet. The shower in the single room was not as functional. It has a big sitting room area as well as a big kitchen where we had our dinners.
There was only a coffee maker but no kettle. All other essentials were there. The stove were gas.
The apartment also had a terrace, where there was a Brazilian area as well as a jacuzzi which functioned as a dip pool.
We did a city tour which included the Christ the Redeemer entrance, the park next to the statue, Seleron steps and we had lunch close to the Seleron steps. Rice and black beans are part of almost every meal u order. As the apartment is in the main road there we many taxis going by which u could stop if u needed one. The Uber was cheaper than the taxis but unfortunately the app didn’t allow me to book as it asked for a cpf number which only Brazilians have.
Page only thing that was a bit frustrating was that people did not speak English so communication was a bit of an issue. I had the du lingo app but that was not sufficient to have a conversation, but it helped a bit.
Rio was a lovely place and would definitely go back there if I am able to.Written September 11, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. While busy buying the bag, I, again, accidentally dropped my Fendi bucket hat. Although, it was difficult to converse as I dont have a portugues knowledge, was able to go to cuatomer service. And lo and behold, my hat was there. Thank you so much.Written November 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PrestonGuildUnited Kingdom56,053 contributionsYou see these stalls that come to life in the late afternoon and early evening.
Paintings, bags, maps fridge magnets, clothes from tee shirts to football shirts. All kinds of souvenirs and you might be able to haggle a price.
You will notice the same or similar items will pop up in other stalls further down.
It can get a bit hectic in the evening and we did visit it a few times and purchased some items.Written April 30, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It has many floors and on the last floor , there is a balcony where you can see a fanstastic view of Botafogo. The backdrop of Botafogo beach is terrific!! There are many bars nearby where you can have fun with your friends.Written May 15, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - arvind1000Pune, India2,721 contributionsWe visited this municipal market on the outskirts of Rio, for the Flower and Plants section, which was varied, extensive in range and an amazing experience. Nowhere in the world would you see such a wholesale market for tropical plants including orchids, bromeliads, etc. The market is large and spread over 100,000 square metres.
On weekends, particularly from afternoon onwards the place is brimming with locals - there is music and a number of restaurants and pricing substantially lower than in the city. A bit far but easily accessible by Uber if you are worried about safety.Written October 20, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The prices were fair and what I enjoyed was no haggling or pressure to buy. We always buy a painting on vacation and there were so many to choose from- we stored at many different booths before choosing the one that was right for us.

I would not recommend venturing to Mercadao De Madureira if you are a tourist or do not know the area well. We did not feel at all safe so did not get out of the vehicle.Written June 12, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - lanj0sRio de Janeiro, RJ45 contributionsIt looks deceivable small form the Avenida das Americas, but it is larger on the sidestreet. Nice movie theather, mainly room number 6. Great seats, screen and sound. Good restaurants, for different tastes and $. It has a lot of nice stores, a good and clean environent and parking. A good surprise. The only drawback was the limited number of wheelchairs available.Written October 22, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - westy54Sydney, Australia13,406 contributionsThis local market is located around the sides of the Praca Nossa Senhora da Paz just outside the entrance to the Nossa Senhora da Paz metro station in Ipanema.
The market only operates on a Friday morning and whilst it is relatively small there are a good number of stalls selling some beautifully fresh fruit (some of which we hadn't seen before), vegetables, eggs, mushrooms plus some fish and meat. There were a good number of locals buying produce and we could see why.
There were also a few stalls selling hand crafted souvenirs.Written February 27, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
