What travelers are saying
- Rainer KaltenbrunnerRio de Janeiro, RJ6 contributionsThe Museu da Inconfidencia covers a much broader topic than the title "da Inconfidencia" would suggest. The "inconfidencia" is a failed late 18th century rebellion against Portuguese colonial rule and as such regarded a predecessor of Brazilian independence more than 2 decades later. The center of it was Ouro Preto and the museum duly deals with that event. But the museum goes well beyond that and explains the whole history of Ouro Preto in its political, social and cultural dimensions. The exhibits are well explained (you should have at least some background of Brazlilian history). (That the audio guides did not work should definitely be a concern for the administration.) The museum is located in the former townhall, an interesting building in itself with strong colonial roots.
Having visited the museum you would understand that Brasil is much more than Rio, Sao Paulo, the Amazonas and the Nordeste, that Minas has been an important constitutive part for more than three centuries.Written April 24, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is well preseved and with very good information.Written August 20, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alexandre PRio de Janeiro, RJ36 contributionsyou can get a glimpse of the sociological strata through what was used for praying. Poor people, rich people, merchants...Written September 6, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rainer KaltenbrunnerRio de Janeiro, RJ6 contributionsThe "casa dos Incofidentes" with its premises as well as with its interior provides an excellent example of a "chácara", a major farmhouse, well-to-do town-dwellers used to own in the surroundings of Ouro Preto. Not expect a luxurious 18th century mansion - the tremendous amount of gold found in Ouro Preto enriched others.Written April 24, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GuzziOaxaca, Mexico1 contributionThis is the best tourist attraction in Ouro Preto by far. Well organized and very rich in culture and the history of this old town.Written March 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RHAHJNijmegen, The Netherlands1,979 contributionsThis museum has nice collections of fossils and minerals, and also of some shells. The fossils include the earliest registered human skeleton in America, estimated at 10-12 million years old. Another highlight is the fossil poo of therapsids (dicynodontiae or so). No big dinosaurs or so. There is also a section about mining activities. Unfortunately I visited just before closing time, and I had no chance to see the star observatory and some other sections.Written May 28, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WC-Travelers-75West Chester, PA2,201 contributionsWe tried to visit after lunch on a Saturday and the museum was closed. - Anna PSao Paulo, SP14 contributionsThis is a very cute place and makes you feel like you are in a movie. It is very historical and nice to see. The train tour is awesome.Written February 5, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- CaTravel_10San Francisco, CA131 contributionsI particularly enjoy smaller museums that show you the intimacy of an artist's life. The Guignard House Museum is just that. You can visit various rooms (I think three stories), relax and sit around, and buy small gifts. Some of the art reminds me of Frieda Kahlo. If you're getting tired of the consumerism of Ouro Preto, do stop in.Written September 22, 2013This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Renatão CBelo Horizonte, MG207 contributionsThe Pharmacia Museum, located in the splendid Baroque city of Ouro Preto, is an impersonal visit for those who enjoy the history of science. The collection, very well preserved, is made up of laboratory pieces and furniture from the oldest pharmacy faculty in South America. A beautiful trip to the past!Written June 17, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- tiogegecaOuro Preto, MG402 contributionsIt's a plus but the church is the star of the visit. The museum holds great stuff, but there were many more things to see some years ago. Let me tell you (this is from a native that has become an architect influenced but is there to see): that may sound strange but it seems that treasures keep moving in Ouro Preto! Some disapear in the process!Written January 24, 2012This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
