It is an important sample of Baroque art, but the most important characteristic of the church is its fabulous inner decoration, mostly executed in the first half of the 18th century.
At the "Igreja e Convento de São Francisco", you will find an exuberant inner decoration, where walls, pillars, vaults and ceilings are completely covered by golden sculpted gilt woodwork and paintings.

The church is attractive from its exterior, with its two towers by the facade and all painted in blue, as well as from the interior, with pleasantly much less gold than one sees in the other churches of the town.
It was amazing! the priest was full of heart, made a genuine connection with the congregation, and had a beautiful voice.

... just the way it works) The best part was the underground tunnels the Catholic churches in Salvador (8 total) had built to hide their gold from the Portuguese to avoid taxes and shipping their gold to Portugal!
After nearly four years of restorations, the Cathedral is back to its full beauty, enhancing its mannerist and baroque architectural styles.

As a tradition, when you get there you must tie a colored cotton 'bracelet' (Fita do Senhor do Bonfim) at the gate of the church and make wishes, prayers, or thanks.
Exquisite church - with significant historical significance- If you can only visit one church in Bahia make sure this is the one!

The church has a volunteer local guide who is very well versed on its history, architecture, sculptures and paintings.
He explained all the carvings and panels, showed us private rooms, and, of course, the carving of Christ (after the crucifixion) with 2,000 rubies representing drops of blood embedded in the carving.
