If you are looking for a break from temple visits and can’t travel far from Kyoto this is your stop! Only 30 min from downtown Kyoto but it feels very remote in a beautiful mountain setting. Riding the electric train up the mountain is part of the fun. Outdoor onsen is wonderful and very serene. We also enjoyed the indoor bath. Restaurant serves good food. A wonderful way to spend a rainy and cool January afternoon.

This onsen is large and beautiful. Many baths available at different temperatures, a spa (book ahead your treatments) and a restaurant. There is a room to lie down when done upstairs, which I wish I had done as I left completely wiped and not prepared to walk to train. The staff didn't speak very much English so we had some trouble to understand all that was available and proper onsen etiquette. Men and Women are separated, lockers available, but I'm not sure if they provide towels so recommend you bring your own. In case you go and have no idea what to do, you are to undress completely in the change room, find the "stalls" with showers that have a stool to sit on and a bucket for pouring water on yourself, then you can explore all tubs. I highly recommend this onsen. Very clean and large with a lot of things to do.

We chose this sento ( as said before here on trip advisor this is not an onsen) because of my tats. No issue whatsoever with that. We purchased soap and towels for a reasonable price and got in.
The sento was almost empty, no tourist except me.
The outdoor pools are simply heavenly after an entire day walking.
I have to say though that old women were staring at me all the time, don't know why, and that made me feel uncomfortable.
The experience was very good anyway and I hope I can go again before returning home.

A segregated public bath with a sauna and a number of hot pools with different jets and temperatures, including a cold one. Women also have an outdoor pool. Very few non-Japanese bathers, but foreigner friendly. My wife and I went several times, because it was near our hotel and a such a bargain. Bur don't expect luxury.

This place is a very nice, local onsen and I was the only non-Japanese person there (as it's in a quiet part of town). There is an outdoor and and indoor part and the place is very clean and the staff are most helpful. There are a number of water jet/jacuzzi like baths which are very powerful if you really want that strong massage feel. There is also a steam room and a sauna. Remember to take two 100 yen coins though, as you need one for your shoe locker and one for your clothes locker (both are returned)
