    Review of: Mariinskiy Theatre
    A great experience.
    We were on a group tour, and one evening was reserved for a performance of Cinderella, at this theatre. If you have to see ballet once in your life, you might as well see it here. Grand building indeed. Incidentally, photos are OK till the start of the performance. In fact, the place is really photogenic, and I would strongly urge photo buffs to come really early to get plenty of shots. Once it starts, no photos and no videos! If you have binoculars, take them with you. This is one place a good pair of binoculars would come in handy!

    Review of: Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall
    Both Mariinsky theatres are stunning
    I had been to the traditional Mariinsky once before when it still had its Soviet name the Kirov Theatre. It's a fabulous place to see opera and ballet and to watch the Petersburg aficionados.

    We saw the opera 'Sadko' by Rimsky Korsakov which is four hours long with two intervals and composed of seven tableaux. It is an entrancing fairy tale with a Sea Princess and other entertaining characters. The staging was gorgeous. It is well worth seeing even if you're not an opera fan. The surtitles were in both Russian and English which helped a lot.

    We had seats in the first level of the galleries in box 15. Great view. But some other people in the box had shuffled the chairs around and tried to take the front row chairs we had paid more for. Fortunately, the competent usher sorted it all out.

    Another night we went to the new Mariinsky 2 theatre and it is jaw droppingly beautiful with the foyers lined with illuminated onyx. Wow. The acoustics are superb in the theatre and we loved the production of Richard Strauss' opera 'Die Frau ohne Schatten' - The Woman without a Shadow.

    Book via the Mariinsky website. We had no trouble at all with booking or with presenting the tickets we had printed at home. Watch out for expensive online scalper sites. Book direct with the Mariinsky (and the Bolshoi in Moscow).

    Review of: The St. Petersburg Masterskaya Theatre
    Great theater filled with young talent
    We were there to see an 8-hour long play based on And Quiet Flows the Don novel. Frankly i was skeptical (8 hrs? really?!) But i was so happy that i chose to go! It was such a well done production! The cast have made an amazing job portraying characters from the book.

    Review of: Leningrad Center
    An exciting two-hour dance show with acrobatic elements
    I went to Leningrad Center with my friends to see a show called Timeless. The show itself is a combination of the Cirque du Soleil trailers and cuts from a dance TV show with some songs thrown into the mix. The plot was so convoluted that we didn’t manage to grasp it. Our bad, as we came completely unprepared, not having read the short summary. The acrobatics part was good, as well as a variety of dances: from African tribal to hip-hop (although one might say it’s pretty much the same thing). But noone fell asleep during the whole show, which is a rare thing. One can get drinks during the breaks. Some even managed to gain access to alcohol throughout the whole performance. Would recommend!

    Review of: Tovstonogov Bolshoy Drama Theater
    Swan Lake Performed Beautifully
    Other than a few audience members trying to record the performance, Swan Lake at Tovstonogov Bolshoy Drama Theater is really a delight. My wife and I were in the middle of Row 4 and being able to see facial expression is really great. The seats are a bit lacking in padding but the dancing and sets are fantastic. As other reviewers have said, the orchestra was perfect. Perfect.

    Review of: Saint Petersburg Academic Drama Theater of V. F. Komissarzhevskoi
    A Memorable Performance
    When in Russia, you must see a ballet. One of the excursions on our Russian River Cruise aboard the Viking Ingvar was a ballet performance of Swan Lake in St. Petersburg. The performance and music were excellent. The small theatre was beautiful and the perfect setting. A wonderful experience that I will never forget.

    Review of: Buff Theater
    Great place
    Great place to visit to see nice performances by russian artists. We have visited "Rain/Dojdz" performace which was really interesting from beginning to the end. The actors are really impresive. I can highly recommend this place if you are looking for theatre (not opera or ballet) and you understand russian.
