What travelers are saying
- jbg74Saint Paul, MN961 contributionsThis museum is a treasure trove of Russian art by Russian artists. I loved the Vareshchagin hall which included his most famous central Asian paintings of war and death. Many of the most famous Russian paintings are here and there are some spectacular ones. This is one of the best art museums in the world. Vasnetsov's Bogatyrs is incredible. I really liked "The Rooks have Come Back" by Savrasov. There are a bunch of great forest scenes by Shishkin. If you are a Vrubel fan then you have to come here too. This is a definite must-see museum in Moscow. Since it is devoted to Slavic art I would probably rank it the top must-see museum.Written March 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jbg74Saint Paul, MN961 contributionsThis museum inside the Kremlin has an excellent, varied collection of Russian artifacts - dresses from the Czarina, weapons, armor, Faberge eggs, etc. You will probably have to get a ticket in advance whereas you can easily get into the rest of Kremlin and churches without difficulty the day of your visit. A Kremlin visit is a must-see when in Moscow and this is an important part of a Kremlin visit.Written March 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jbg74Saint Paul, MN961 contributionsI am not usually a fan of modern art museums but the New Tretyakov Gallery is an exception. The Socialist Realism collection is pretty amazing. They have some excellent early 20th Century works. If you are a fan of Marc Chagall, you definitely have to visit. I enjoyed some of the newer works from the last 50-60 years too which is rare for me. I would consider this to be a must-see museum in Moscow as well.Written March 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Samriti Goel SaranMoscow, Russia52 contributionsIt was a group tour of women assisted by an English speaking guide. Beautiful rooms with beautiful art, culture & lifestyle showcasing the 18the century Russian elite. Weather was comfortable cool (soon going to be cold). Best time to visit is summers (May to August). No electricity is established, so as to maintain its original form. It was the Summer or Party palace (not the residence) of Count Pyotr Sheremetyov. Was Used for hosting grand receptions for diplomats and parties for elite. Has a lovely & big pond. Beautiful gardens and sculptures. Silk wallpaper, woven tapestries & 18th century chinaware are absolutely fascinating. Closes during winters.
P.S.- English speaking guide definitely improves the whole experience!Written September 27, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Two of them are located next to each other: Main building and Gallery of 19th and 20th Century European and American Art. So you can spend a day there and enjoy seeing art of several centuries. The permanent exhibition is quite large: paintings, sculptures, vases and other art objects. Later I found out that the holdings of the museum contain around 700 000 art works!!! And also The Pushkin State Museum is in possession of one of the largest world art collections from Ancient Egypt and Greece to our days. You should definitely dive in these ancient artifacts and take pics there!
The second building with 19th and 20th centuries' art is my favorite. Original Picasso, Matisse, Monet, Gauguin etc are must see! I could spend a few hours looking at “Lilas au soleil”!
Usually you can buy a combined ticket to two buildings, but due to circumstances you have to buy them separately and strictly by session times.
After watching all the exhibitions you can walk down the street towards The Kremlin. Alexander , They say the garden is magical at any season and I agree with it.Written December 28, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Unlike the main museum, this is an incredible museum with one of the best Impressionist collections I have seen outside Paris. They had great art from all of the famous Impressionists. I really enjoyed their Monet and Van Gogh collections with 5-6 paintings from each artist. They has some excellent Art Nouveau pieces and a nice painting by Edvard Munch. There was just a lot of great art in this museum. If you love art this museum along with both Tretyakov museums is an absolute must-see.Written March 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Takarasina1,356 contributionsI visited that place together with my grandchildren in July. I had booked a private tour (RUR 2,700 ≈ USD 37) and paid for it electronically so when we came there everything was ready.
It is really one of Moscow's historical gems. It may be visited both individually and in a group, both with a guide and without him/her plus in English for sure. You'll really be awestruck when climbing the first floor where the panorama is exhibited but please bear in mind that there'll mostly be a copy to admire there since Soviet communists dismantled it in 1918 as "worthless piece of bourgeois art" and stored it in such conditions that nearly half of it rotted out. They tried to restore it after the WWII but failed and just "re-pained" what was missing - simultaneously "improving" the original and inserting "ideologically correct" images. Later, in 1967 Chinese comrades-tourists made their contribution by splashing some inflammable liquid upon it and setting it on fire. More than 60 per cent of the panorama was turned to ashes.
But it nevertheless takes your breath away. Well worth a visit!
(Bear in mind, however, that most Russians would claim they had won that battle. Never ask them how it came then that the Russian army retreated and Napoleon captured Moscow several days later - they might treat such a question as impolite :))Written July 30, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Well, it's not for everyone, but it's a window into Russian art, history, and culture, when icons were not only objects of public/private devotion but a means to communicate spiritual truths to an illiterate peasantry. The staff may be the single nicest collection of people I've met thus far in Russia. And the whole thing is on the site of a beautiful little monastery, which when built must have been a mile or two outside Moscow. The grounds and walls are currently undergoing much needed renovations. Oh, and the cafe on the grounds is terrific.Written May 31, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- OldAccountantNorthampton, UK358 contributionsThere are three or four floors of icons large and small from across 8 or 9 centuries. Called in quite late and was practically alone in the museum which is free to visit.
By their nature, icon subjects are limited (Mother and Child, Christ Mandylion, Saints) and prescriptively stylised and so any display can be repetitive. Icons can also be a bit of a niche interest but there is something here to interest most people, I would think.
While there is adequate English labelling, one could do with some Christian knowledge to understand some of the references or content.
If you have a Catholic or obviously any strand of Orthodox background, you will not have too much bother. The further you stray from this (eg non-conformist to non-Christian), the more you will be looking from a strictly artistic perpective.
I enjoyed my visit here, which is accessible by metro or tram (about 10-15 minutes walk) - there is a also a velobike station quite close ( a few minutes walk).Written August 11, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If You like impressionist art - it's a place to visit, while in Moscow!Written August 1, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SlotinshOslo, Norway262 contributionsExcellent place to spend time and see art. Multiple levels and multiple artists at the same time, not that crowded regarding art placement and people. Museum is in nice area so walk afterwards gives extra experience.Written January 8, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ZuevyMoscow, Russia1,433 contributionsIf you are interested in history, Oriental art and philosophy at the same time, then this is a very good place to visit. The exposition is mainly formed from Soviet times, but is maintained in good condition. All regions of Asia are represented, starting from Japan and ending with Iran and Tajikistan.
Two or three hours can be spent with interest.
One of the disadvantages is a poor museum store.Written December 11, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I personally feel that the size of the collection is just right for a nice afternoon outing (i sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed by the sheer size of the collection of the main museums).
Visit this with the Cathedral of Christ our Saviour (which is magnificent) and chill out in the garden. It will make a nicely-paced and interesting day out.
The entrance to the gallery is next to a carpark and might be quite easy to miss.Written April 15, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. She enjoyed it, but there were few baskets and/or birchbark containers. However, the museum made up for this lack with an excellent collection of painted Easter eggs and an extensive collection of traditional lacquerware boxes. I was rather surprised to find that this latter artform had been co-opted during Soviet times and that there were boxes featuring images of Stalin, etc. Very interesting! As a former English teacher, I was surprised to find that a box featuring a scene from "King Lear" was labeled as being a scene from Shakespeare's "King Lyre" (sic). (In the amber collection, the Dominican amber is from Puerto Plata (silver port), a resort on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic famous for amber and larimar, but the curators substituted another word for "plata."Written May 30, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SlotinshOslo, Norway262 contributionsInteresting place to spend time and have a new experience. I would suggest to visit it when it’s not for free, q will make it miserable(experienced it during New Years holidays). Museum offers loads of options and possibilities and gives a fresh air of art. Book shop also allows to get great gifts. Definitely place to visit.Written January 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
