What travelers are saying
- Chek Chuin SSingapore, Singapore89 contributionsTook a nice tram ride and walked to the ropeway. Views from the ropeway were already amazing. Needless to say the views at the top were mind blowing. Unfortunately, we had a train to catch back to Sapporo so we missed the sunset and night view. If there’s a next time we would plan to stay a night or two to give this a proper visit.Written March 3, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kent PBatavia, OH100 contributionsI really enjoyed the views on a clear day. Interesting history on many dioramas on the viewing level.Written October 23, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Zhi XuanSingapore, Singapore6 contributionsThe most historical monument in Hakodate pre-dating the Meiji Restoration. It is a Vauban-style pentagon-shaped fortress symbolic of the Tokugawa Shogunate's efforts to modernise after the Perry Expedition.
We visited during winter so the only attraction is the Magistrate's Office (which is certainly worth visiting). There's lots of slippery, melted snow on the castle walls so it's not so easy to trek. Might be better to visit during spring.Written January 13, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The slope is part of the traffic system so be careful when taking photos as the same slope is shared by vehicular traffic!Written December 25, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - roy vTraralgon, Australia4,560 contributionsWhile in Hakodate for a few days we used the tram a lot.
It was always clean and never crowded, the drivers were always polite and helpful.
It took us to all the places we needed to go .
The stops were never too far apart and it came about every 15 minutes.

Good for a hour or so walk through and right next to the JR Station.Written November 13, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - dynamic14Singapore, Singapore9,837 contributionsYou can access the ropeway by tram which stops a distance away or by bus which stops directly in front of the ropeway station.
Open at 10am, it costs JPY1000 for a one-way trip or JPY1500 for a return journey. It takes approximately 3 minutes on the ropeway where you can enjoy some magnificent views as well.Written February 10, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We spent 3 to 4 hours walking around and visiting the various historical buildings.Written December 25, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ben L288 contributionsAlthough it's closed for upkeep due to earthquake, this area is still very much the place to go to with its surrounding areas full of history and beautiful sites to walk around such as the old British Consulate, park, etc.Written December 16, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - nadiahkimiePetaling Jaya, Malaysia125 contributionsThe monastery is famous for their butter and madeleines, so we were disappointed to find out we couldn't actually buy any butter on site. You can also only access the front of a small part of the monastery, but the bit you can see is quite lovely.Written July 3, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Paula H379614 contributionsThis Museum is easy to find for a tourist using public transport once you work out the tram system, as the stops are close (you can see the tracks in the photo). I love the anime 'Mononoke Hime' or 'Princess Mononoke' and a central protagonist is the boy/village leader of a northern group who tries to resolve the pressures of industrialisation and people's independence and survival on the natural world and a spiritual life. As a result this trip we travelled to the northernmost point of Hokkaido (Cape Soya) and sought out this Museum. Fascinating displays on this restricted theme - honest and factual in the Japanese style. English handouts - so much stays with me - the salmon skin shoes, the embroidery, the weapons. I'll try to go again, as Hakodate is at the southern end of Hokkaido and easy to visit physically and culturally.Written April 12, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MattW79102 contributionsSkilfully remade wooden building in the old style, lots to see, only about 1/3 in english but that's still a lot.Written September 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- dynamic14Singapore, Singapore9,837 contributionsBeautiful architecture built in 1860, this is accessible from the Daikan Zaka slope. This church was originally built as a chapel attached to the first Russian Consulate.
The original church was destroyed by the Great Fire of Hakodate in 1907 and rebuilt in 1916.Written February 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You will see a rooster at the top of the octagonal tower which is 33 metres in height. This rooster supposedly serves as a guardian.
There is no admission fee to enter the church though photography and videography are prohibited.Written February 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I’m a turf fan…this horse racetrack is so good.
Because:
Very neat and clean.
safe and clean and has enough space to hang around.
2) Easy to access.
has enough place to park and 25 minutes by bus or Tram.
3) Food are delicious.
Friendly and reasonable… I love Tempra Soba and Onigiri. at Sobaokoro Hatsune
Remember that it's not a fancy restaurant.
4) If you want a long shot…
Check the results of horse races, you would realize it…
Anyway, I love this place.Written June 16, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
