It may be just a run-of-the-mill modern road bridge, but it was interesting to cross on a crisp January morning and see the river largely frozen over, just 200m from where it enters the sea. Surprising!

The itinerary boasted two thousand varieties of plants and animals including deer and sea eagle. We saw hardly any any flowers because of the time of year. We saw a few baby cicadas, some small birds, yet to be identified and very little else. There was a long walk with a suspension bridge and lots of steps up and down. Not suitable if you have knee or mobility problems.

Unfortunately on the day we visited it was snowing hard, but the center has numerous exhibits regarding wildlife seen in the Kushiro area. There is an open air observatory at the top, a gift shop and cafe.

We are in Kushiro and staying at the ANA Crowne Plaza which was opposite the MOO

We took a shuttle bus from Kushiro Airport which stops at MOO (¥940).

It’s a quiet place with quite a few souvenir shops selling chocolates and snacks. There is also a small market selling seafood.

    There are several restaurants/ cafe.

We spent less an hour and finished seeing the entire place.

The city circular tour bus (starting from near where our cruise ship docked) stopped off at this shrine for enough time to walk up and have a brief look.

We were given the opportunity to stop off and wait for the next bus an hour later, but frankly after seeing bigger shrines in Kyoto this would not have justified a full hour.

In fairness, it’s in an attractive location and the shrine is worth a look if you are nearby, anyway.
