Asahiyama Zoo

Asahikawa
... their winter nap while snowing, the hippos (Asako & Momokichi doing their ballet dancing), the closest encounter one could have with giraffes in any zoo, polar bears rubbing their back against the powdery snow...
Loved the different viewpoints for the "dancing hippo" and of course the penguin walk in the snow right in front of you.

... - do our own feeds to the sea lions and seals; - touch and feel the octopus, sea urchin, starfish, sea cucumber etc; - animal shows: the usual with dolphins and seals, with a more unique one involving walrus .
The closest encounter one can get:- - winter in snow, penguins walking next to you. - dolphin show with dolphin only 3m away.
They've obvious done a lot to bring the zoo up to world's best practice for most animals, and soon they will open a magnificent new elephant house.
... lot of the exhibits are indoors, some of the bigger animals on the outdoor exhibits were smarter than me and staying inside where it was warm but the polar bears were out and it was a nice enclosure to view them.
joining the tours programs will take you more than just to the Aquarium but to drive thru the beautiful scene is already make you feel closed to nature.
A wide variety of fresh water species collection, together with salmon or trout grown locally.

The staff takes great care of the seals.
The highlight will be the Penguin Parade where you get to see and photos the Penguin in close promix.
The bears are free (almost...) and visitors are able to watch from promanande on the trees and from a special glass house.
Bears are in the open and we are in enclosed bus or walkways- almost Jurassic-Park-like experience in the heavily caged and protected bus going through double secured fencing!
