- William SKobe, Japan1,249 contributionsYou’ll have to take the ropeway to get there and back - no other way in or out. The main temple itself is quite beautiful - be sure to seek out the wood carvings along the exterior fencing - along with a few smaller adjacent shrines. The steps are high and it takes some energy to get there. Meanwhile, the older Japanese are scrambling up and down. It’s an interesting place to visit if you like temples and shrines. This particular one is to a smaller “sect” within Buddhism and reminded us of the temple at Nikko near Narita. This one is smaller but still quite attractive.Written December 2, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - treesrgreenieAdelaide, Australia173 contributionsA short walk on a lovely boardwalk brings you to the 1500 ancient gnarly pine trees along the coast. The black volcanic sand on the beach is a great foreground to photos of Mt Fuji. This Unesco world heritage site is worth a visit.Written January 18, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ruth MKamakura, Japan71 contributionsWe had a great time watching the seals. And there was a huge slide which was fun too. It is like a roller slide from the top of the mountain.Written April 27, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tokugawa_IeyasuFujieda, Japan103 contributionsThe Satta-toge Pass should have been one of the roughest spot on the Tokai-do in the past. We can see many cyclists and hikers walking along the ancient road, but it looks very tough.
At the peak of the Satta-toge, the great view of the Mt. Fuji and Suruga Gulf would be brought to you if the weather could be fine.Written February 15, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I thought it was so interesting.
The location is also good, about twenty minute walk from Jr Shizuoka station.
It was just a kind of hiking as it was nice day when we visited there.
It's worth visiting there. I recommend you visit there and have a relaxing time.Written March 19, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This place is big and it offered visitors a gorgeous view of surrounding area and Mount Fuji, all blend beautifully with its impressive modern architecture. And it is free for the public. It was cloudy when we went there, so we did not see Mount Fuji. Nevertheless, we were still awed by the scenery.
After visiting the place, we walked to the nearby ropeway (require purchase tickets) to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine.
Recommended to plan a trip to this dream terrace. We took a direct bus from Shizuoka station and it takes about a 50 min ride.Written October 24, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - William SKobe, Japan1,249 contributionsThe ropeway is easy to take. Tickets for a round trip and access to the temple can be purchased from a machine using cash or credit card. Access to the ropeway is well marked, the time for the next two cars is marked and people are well-behaved. The ride itself offers a nice view of the mountainside and tress. At the end of the ropeway is a beautiful temple. There are LOTS of steps, though, so if you are not fairly able then you might skip that part and just return on the ropeway. We enjoyed it. I don’t know if I would take kids, though. They might enjoy scrambling over the tall steps but they might not be so interested in the temple.Written December 1, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lucia YourKuala Lumpur, Malaysia12 contributionsOkuoikojo station has a magnificent view of emerald color Oi river, surrounded by beautiful mountains. The unique part of this trip is u need to get a ride on a train to enjoy the scenic views.
One of the interesting fact about the train ride is, it has the steepest track in Japan! To climb the steep, the train uses the only Abt system rack railway in Japan. The Abt system is a type of railway with a special, gear-like rail.
The journey starts from Senzu station to Okuoikojo station. We drove to Sumata valley, where the Senzu station is. We parked our car next to the station. It is a small town, but there are small hotels, convenient shops, small cafe and tourist center in the middle of the town.
At the train station, we checked the time schedule for the train and then took the 1230noon ride.
We were lucky that we did it on weekday and there was no crowd. We had the train all by ourselves.
The train is clean and the staffs are very helpful!
The one way journey took about 1hr. Although the train moved slow, we really enjoyed our time, sit back and relax… by just enjoying the moment and the mother nature!.
During the changed out to use the ABT system, the staff showed us how the train got connected to ABT system and it was done under 5mins!
At Okuoikojo station, we spent a quick 20-30mins around the station. Followed by walking along the bridge, this is where you could see the beautiful Oigawa river!
We took shuttle bus to return to Senzu station, as we needed to head out to Kyoto on the same day. The bus ride only took us about 20mins. If u want to try the bus ride, be sure to check with the staff upfront, as the bus stop is not easy to find. We experienced a small hiccup, but eventually we with the help from the local people we managed to find it.Written December 17, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Everything is within walking distance and it a great port to walk around and get the feel of suburban Japan.
On the ground floor of the mall is a cafe/coffee shop which serves the best coffee we had in a month of travels throughout Asia.
Small casual port, no need to take a ship tour'Written April 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. In particular, the centrepiece 'Gates of Hell' is spectacular, and a definite 'must see.'
Also worth noting is that this gallery was't at all busy when I went, and there were only a handful of other visitors. This really let me relax and take everything in without being disturbed - a definite plus point!Written September 15, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The moat and original surrounding wall are still left as well as some castle fragments inside.
Once the castle of the retired Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu stood here. But even the grounds as they are today are interesting.
At present it is just a very nice big park area with some rebuilt castle structures like in the south eastern and west eastern corner. There you can see and visit two very impressive reconstructed turrets which are open to the public (Hitsujisaru Yagura and Tatsumi Yagura). In the south eastern corner there is the rebuilt Higashi Gomon Gate.
Also the Sumpu Castle Tower Base Excavation should not be missed. This is where the main building once stood.
So, apart from the reconstructed turrets and gate there are a lot of castle remains scattered over the place which in themselves are very interesting to look at.Written September 9, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's small and clean, with polite staff, though the gift shop's a little expensive and (like many art museums in Japan) photography is prohibited in most of the museum. As it's in Aoi Tower, it's easy to get lunch or do some shopping after you visit. I'd give it one to two hours, depending on how much you're interested in the current exhibit. Despite what the menu on this website says, I actually visited in 2014 and 2015.Written April 7, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Guillaume AShizuoka, Japan499 contributionsNothing too exciting about this mall, besides the movie complex on the top and the ferry wheel, right outside. But the location is nice, by the water, near shimizu port.Written August 1, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - HonestcoupleLancashire134 contributionsTried to squeeze this in before returning to Tokyo. Wished we had had more time,as his work was outstanding and varied. TAXI WARNING. It’s a bit off the beaten track,so we asked the museum to phone for a taxi to the station. They happily did,but we had a nervy wait of 15 mins before it arrived (with reserved shinkansen seats in our pockets).Written December 18, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - olafoomesAmstelveen, The Netherlands1,671 contributionsThe top of this mountain, with its 307 meters high, can be easily accessed by a bus (about 2 buses each hour)from Shizuoka JR station. When I was there the waiting line became real long so apparently the mountain is a very popular outing. Nevertheless especially the last part of the about half an hour trip is very nice when the bus actually climbs the mountain. When you arrive the top you will immediately see a huge mast and platform from which you have a spectacular view over the area and, when you are lucky with the visibility, Mount Fuji.
From the top you can take the ropeway to the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine also located on the mountain.Written September 8, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
